Hutch is a young honeybee violently separated from his mother during a wasp attack that annihilates their hive. This traumatic event propels his perilous journey to find her, where he encounters various insects offering aid; tragically, many of these allies perish during his travels. In the sequel series, Hutch achieves reunion with his mother and sister Aya, only for another wasp assault to kill the queen bee. He also confronts Apachi, a vengeful wasp blaming Hutch for his father's death.
