Movie
Description
Kira Yamato is a first-generation Coordinator, genetically enhanced at conception and known as the "Ultimate Coordinator" due to his artificial gestation and superior genetic modifications. He is the biological son of Dr. Ulen Hibiki and Via Hibiki, and the twin brother of Cagalli Yula Athha. Following his parents' deaths, Caridad and Haruma Yamato adopted him, raising him on the neutral space colony Heliopolis. During childhood, he befriended Athrun Zala, who later joined ZAFT.
Initially a pacifistic engineering student, Kira's life shifted when ZAFT attacked Heliopolis. To protect his friends, he piloted the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, modifying its operating system mid-battle despite lacking formal combat training. Drafted into the Earth Alliance, he faced discrimination as a Coordinator within a Natural-dominated military. This isolation, combined with combat trauma, led to severe anxiety, depression, and self-imposed isolation. His relationship with Flay Allster further manipulated him into heightened aggression, culminating in lethal confrontations where he killed Nicol Amalfi and nearly killed Athrun Zala.
Surviving his duel with Athrun, Kira was rescued by Reverend Malchio and recovered in PLANT under Lacus Clyne's care. Lacus gifted him the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, prompting his return to the conflict with a new resolve: to end the war by disabling enemy mobile suits non-lethally, targeting limbs or weapons instead of cockpits. He joined the Three Ships Alliance, opposing both Earth Alliance and ZAFT extremists. During this period, Rau Le Creuset revealed his origins as the Ultimate Coordinator, triggering an existential crisis. With Lacus's support, he reconciled his identity, concluding his genes did not define his humanity. He confronted and defeated Rau, contributing to the war's end.
Post-war, Kira lived peacefully in the Orb Union's Marshall Islands, assisting Lacus and Reverend Malchio with an orphanage. Renewed conflict in the Second Alliance-PLANT War forced him back into battle. He piloted the Freedom Gundam to thwart an assassination attempt on Lacus and opposed Orb's alignment with the Earth Alliance to preserve its neutrality. After Shinn Asuka destroyed the Freedom, Lacus provided him with the upgraded ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam. Kira grew suspicious of Gilbert Durandal's motives, opposing the Destiny Plan for suppressing free will and individual choice. He argued humanity could learn from mistakes and forge a better future through choice, vowing to protect that ideal.
In the film *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom*, Kira served in the peacekeeping organization COMPASS, piloting the STSS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam. During a Eurasia mission, Accord genes manipulated him into unauthorized actions, leading to the Rising Freedom's destruction by the Black Knights. Believing Lacus ordered his elimination, he experienced a psychological breakdown but was steadied by Athrun. Infiltrating the Foundation's base, he rescued Lacus, reaffirmed their bond, and piloted the rebuilt ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Type II. With Lacus deploying the MDE262S Proud Defender upgrade, they formed the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam, defeating the Foundation's forces.
Kira possesses exceptional spatial awareness, rapid information processing, and adaptive combat skills. He can enter "SEED Mode," enhancing his reflexes and tactical abilities. Though initially inexperienced with handguns and close-combat weapons, his marksmanship and mobile suit precision are unparalleled, specializing in non-lethally disabling enemy units. His programming expertise allows him to modify mobile suit operating systems in real-time for diverse environments.
Personality-wise, Kira evolved from a reluctant, traumatized soldier to a resolute protector. Early on, he grappled with atychiphobia and self-blame for casualties, leading to obsessive combat behavior. Post-recovery, he embraced a philosophy valuing all life, fighting to save rather than kill. He believes in George Glenn's ideology that Coordinators and Naturals are one humanity, rejecting genetic determinism. While introverted and contemplative, he maintains strong relationships and speaks candidly, challenging perspectives. He avoids formal leadership roles yet inspires loyalty through action. His core traits—compassion, self-sacrifice, and a commitment to free will—remain constant as he matured into a calmer, more philosophical figure.
