Description
Spank is a small white dog with distinctive black or brown ears. After his original owner disappeared during a yacht journey, he waited daily at the beach for a return that never happened. This abandonment ended when he encountered Aiko Morimura, a junior high school student grappling with her own profound losses: her father vanished at sea a decade earlier, her mother relocated to Paris for work, and her pet dog Papi died in a car accident. Spank's arrival eased Aiko's loneliness, gradually alleviating her sadness.

Clumsy yet cheerful and big-hearted, Spank forms a deeply loyal bond with Aiko. He persistently attempts to cheer her up despite frequent comedic failures, such as misguided efforts to become a police dog. He demonstrates emotional intuition, recognizing Aiko's distress and devising strategies to comfort her, like distracting her during grief.

Spank develops a recurring romantic interest in Cat, a Siamese cat owned by Aiko’s classmate Serino Mihara. Cat’s aloof, snobbish demeanor fails to deter his affections, though his attempts to impress her often backfire. Later, he shifts his romantic attention to a blue dog named Fan Fan. His dynamic with Torakichi, a cat, fluctuates between rivalry—particularly over Cat’s attention—and occasional friendship. Baron, another dog, is noted as a companion in their social circle.

Spank exhibits fierce loyalty and determination. After being temporarily reclaimed by his original owner’s family, he undertakes a challenging journey back to Aiko, navigating obstacles through hitchhiking and train travel. His devotion resurfaces when he helps Aiko infiltrate a hospital to reconnect with Rei Ikegami, a boy important to her. Though his actions often create chaos, conflicts typically resolve positively as others forgive his mistakes due to his earnestness.

His background as a stray and unwavering hope during his owner’s absence underscore his resilient, affectionate nature. He thrives as Aiko’s companion, filling the void left by her previous losses and becoming integral to her emotional recovery. His actions consistently reflect a desire to support those he cares about, despite romantic misadventures or comedic errors.
