Description
Harunobu Madarame evolves significantly across the series installments. Introduced as a sophomore, his early leadership potential leads the founding university club president to personally select him as the second president. His extreme otaku tendencies manifest in spending nearly all his money on dōjinshi without regard for cost, frequently neglecting food and basic needs, resulting in poor health and repeated injuries like distal radial bone fractures. He survives on cheap meals like bacon sushi topped with mayonnaise. His deep expertise in adult computer games, particularly pornographic visual novels, later secures him a desk job requiring computer skills at Sakura Pipe Repair.

Outwardly passionate about otaku culture, Madarame vocally champions otaku lifestyles, debating anime/manga trivia and emphasizing the importance of erotic game content. This fervor masks deep-seated insecurities, especially around women, stemming from a high school incident where an insensitive remark about a female classmate's menstruation caused public shaming and isolation. This fuels persistent awkwardness in romantic situations. His dynamic with Saki Kasukabe shifts from initial antagonism—positioning him as her antithesis due to his otaku advocacy—to unrequited romantic feelings. Though he develops a close friendship with Saki and maintains contact after graduation, he deliberately hides his feelings to protect their relationship.

While working full-time, Madarame continues visiting the university clubroom during lunch breaks. His apartment near campus becomes crucial for Kenjirou Hato, allowing Hato space to change between male attire for classes and female presentation for club activities. Unexpectedly, Madarame becomes the romantic focus of four individuals: American exchange student Angela, silent foreign member Sue Hopkins, Sasahara's sister Keiko Sasahara, and Hato. Saki Kasukabe observes this, noting his discomfort with being perceived as a "sou-uke" (submissive figure) in romantic pairings imagined by club members. Makoto Kousaka later directly informs Madarame of this collective interest, including Hato's indirect proposal conveyed through a wish to cook daily meals for him.

Keiko Sasahara orchestrates a confrontation leading to Madarame's awkward confession to Saki, which results in a polite rejection. He subsequently quits his job, admitting he originally took it to stay near the university while Saki was still a student—a motivation Keiko confronts him about. Following this, Madarame experiences a period of uncertainty described as "try[ing] out being a loser" before reconciling his feelings. He ultimately enters a romantic relationship with Sue Hopkins.

Physically, Madarame is tall with broad shoulders but a frail build, mid-length dark hair, shallow eyes, and prominent fangs. He typically wears inexpensive otaku-style clothing until Saki encourages more fashionable attire, resulting in a jacket and suit that becomes his signature outfit for Akihabara visits. Within the narrative, he epitomizes extreme otaku dedication, with the official data book's otaku quiz categorizing its highest tier as "Madarame".
