Description
Kaoru Okita is one of the three main protagonists of this anime, serving as a member of the Mobile Shinsengumi. She is the daughter of the legendary Shinsengumi swordsman Soji Okita, and she carries the weight of that legacy as she dedicates herself to protecting Kyoto from supernatural threats. Her background is unique among her comrades, as she is a half-human hybrid; her mother was a kitsune, a fox spirit, which grants Kaoru distinct non-human traits and abilities.

In terms of personality, Kaoru is often described as energetic, somewhat impulsive, and temperamental, with a particular obsession with food. Her youthful exuberance sometimes clashes with the personalities of her teammates, contributing to the chaotic and destructive nature of the Mobile Shinsengumi's operations. Despite her petite stature, she is considered potentially the most dangerous member of the group, especially when her temper is sparked by matters such as ruined meals or personal slights.

Kaoru's primary motivation is to uphold the honorable legacy of her father and the original Shinsengumi by combating the paranormal threats that plague the Meiji era. She fulfills this duty as a core member of the Mobile Shinsengumi, a rapid-response team that, despite its good intentions, often causes as much destruction and panic among the populace as the demons it fights. Her role in the story is therefore dualistic: she is both a dedicated protector of Kyoto and a comedic source of collateral damage.

Her key relationships are primarily with her fellow team members. She works alongside the hot-headed leader Yuko Kondo and the more stoic ice-elemental user Toshie Hijikata, forming a trio with constantly shifting dynamics and frequent arguments. Kaoru also harbors a one-sided romantic affection for Ryuunosuke Sakamoto, the son of their supervisor, Oryo. Unlike her teammates who sometimes clash with the group's support staff, Kaoru's interactions with the wider cast are often colored by this personal interest.

Throughout the narrative, Kaoru does not undergo a dramatic personality overhaul but is defined by her consistent and lively presence, which contrasts with the more serious Hijikata and the bossy Kondo. The series focuses on how her half-kitsune nature and impulsive reactions drive many of the comedic and action-oriented situations the team encounters.

Notable abilities stem directly from her supernatural heritage. She is a highly skilled swordswoman, capable of holding her own in physical combat. More distinctively, she has the power to wield and control shikigami, which are paper spirits used for magical purposes in Japanese folklore, making her the magical specialist of the group.
