Description
Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, began life as a half-Japanese orphan raised by a Catholic priest in Kanazawa after his mother died shortly after leaving him on church steps. Bullied for his mixed heritage, he also witnessed the mysterious disappearance of fellow orphans later revealed trafficked by Black Ghost through the priest's involvement. When the priest tried to expose the organization, he was murdered, and Joe was wrongfully framed. Escaping police, Joe was captured by Black Ghost and transformed into their most advanced cyborg model, Cyborg 009. He escaped alongside fellow cyborgs and scientist Dr. Gilmore, becoming the team's field leader dedicated to thwarting Black Ghost's global warfare.

His cybernetic enhancements grant superhuman strength, durability, underwater breathing, and sensory capabilities. His signature power, Acceleration Mode, allows Mach 5 speeds activated by a switch in his back molar, making time appear near-stationary. This ability carries risks: air friction burns inanimate objects, and physical contact with non-cyborgs causes severe injury or death. Upgrades in some continuities later enabled molecular acceleration for offense.

Personality-wise, Joe displays idealism and compassion, believing in adversaries' redemption. His traumatic past fuels a self-sacrificing tendency to shoulder others' burdens alone, sometimes causing friction with teammates when prioritizing civilians over their emotional needs. He holds strong loyalty to his fellow cyborgs, viewing them as family, sharing a close bond with Dr. Gilmore and Cyborg 001 (Ivan Whisky). A developing romantic relationship with Cyborg 003 (Françoise Arnoul) appears in several adaptations.

In *Cyborg 009: Legend of the Super Galaxy*, set after Black Ghost's defeat, Joe and the cyborgs pursued civilian lives until alien survivor Saba sought their aid against cosmic conqueror Zoa. Joe reassembled the team. On planet Fantarian, they encountered Princess Tamara; Joe comforted her amid her people's devastation. Though Tamara developed feelings, the narrative emphasized Joe's existing commitments and leadership focus. The climax saw Joe experience a cosmic revelation within the Vortex energy field, harnessing its power to resurrect a fallen comrade and wish for restoration after Zoa's defeat, reinforcing his protector role and willingness to shoulder ultimate responsibility.
