Description
Mukuro Hoshimiya is the tenth Spirit to appear in the main narrative, known by the codename Zodiac. Her past is marked by profound loneliness, as she grew up as an orphan without a family. This changed when she was adopted by a couple who, along with an older sister named Asahi, gave her the warmth she had always craved. Mukuro shared a particularly close bond with her adoptive sister, who would often braid and praise her beautiful long blonde hair while they gazed at the stars together. This happiness was shattered during a visit to the Tenguu Tower, when a friend of her sister suggested that Mukuro should cut her hair. Feeling deeply betrayed that her sister agreed with the suggestion, Mukuro believed her sister’s affection had been transferred to someone else. In her panic and despair, the mysterious entity known as Phantom appeared and bestowed upon her a Sephira Crystal containing the angel Michael. Using this newfound power, she sealed the memories of her family’s acquaintances, intending to make their love exclusive to her. However, her family reacted with terror and anger at her inexplicable abilities, rejecting her entirely. Unable to bear the loss of their love, Mukuro then used Michael to erase their memories of her and, finally, to seal away her own emotions and memories, exiling herself to drift alone in outer space.

Physically, Mukuro is a beautiful young woman with a voluptuous figure, amber-colored eyes, and extraordinarily long blonde hair that reaches past her own body. She typically styles her hair in odango buns secured with ribbons, with dark blue and violet hair accessories resembling rabbit ears attached to them. In her Spirit form, she wears a light purple and white astral dress reminiscent of a qipao, with its skirt divided at the edges to reveal constellation patterns. She also wears transparent purple gloves with similar star patterns and high-heeled shoes attached to metallic greaves that evoke medieval leg armor.

Due to her self-imposed emotional sealing, Mukuro initially exhibits a cold, robotic, and emotionless demeanor. She claims to be content living alone in the void of space and is willing to use threats and violence to ensure no one disturbs her solitude. However, the fact that she revealed to Shido Itsuka that she had sealed her own emotions suggests a deep, subconscious desire for him to save her from her loneliness. After Shido successfully unseals her heart, her true personality re-emerges, which is starkly contrasting and highly emotional. Having grown up as an orphan and then lost her adoptive family, she is terrified of being alone again and becomes desperately attached to those she believes love her. Her affection is pure and innocent, yet also possessive; her fear of abandonment drives her to extreme measures, such as attempting to seal the memories of Shido from all the other Spirits to monopolize him for herself. She speaks in an overly archaic style and often refers to herself in the third person as Muku.

Mukuro’s central role in the story involves her confrontation with Shido and the crew of the Fraxinus. After years of isolation, her slumber in space is interrupted by the DEM Corporation, which sends a fleet to capture her. She effortlessly destroys their warships and scatters their debris across 42 different locations around the world. Shido is subsequently sent to communicate with her. Despite her initial rejection and hostility, Shido persists, and their eventual battle leads to him unlocking the seal on her emotions. Her key relationships are defined by her trauma. Her bond with Shido is the most significant; she comes to see him as her new family after he accepts her and promises never to forget or hate her. She views Tohka Yatogami as a rival for Shido’s affection and becomes enraged when Inverse Tohka cuts her long hair. Her relationship with Origami Tobiichi is more nuanced; while she also tries to seal Origami’s memories, she develops a sort of friendship with her, promising to show her mercy compared to Tohka. Her adoptive sister Asahi remains a source of pain, but also of treasured memories of stargazing and hair-braiding.

Mukuro undergoes significant development, transitioning from a lonely, self-isolated being into a girl who craves and accepts familial love. Her arc resolves when she realizes that her adoptive family did truly love her, and she allows Shido to cut her hair, a symbolic act of letting go of her painful past. As a Spirit, her power is considered extraordinarily high, rivaling that of Kurumi Tokisaki or an Inverse Spirit. Her angel is Michael, which takes the form of a key and grants her abilities related to sealing and unlocking. Her primary abilities include Segva, which seals any function of a target, from machines and other angels to abstract concepts like memories and emotions, and could even be used to halt the Earth’s rotation. Her second ability is Rātaibu, which allows her to open spatial rifts or wormholes for teleportation, redirecting attacks, or summoning debris from space. She can also unleash Michael’s true potential in a form called Shifuru, which transforms the angel into a halberd and allows her to use Jerez, an ability that disintegrates molecular structures and spirit power.
