Description
Tomohito Sugino is a student in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School. He originally attended the school as a member of the baseball club, where he was a pitcher. He was removed from the regular lineup due to his relatively slow pitches, which led opposing batters to frequently hit against him. This experience caused him to lose confidence in his athletic abilities, and his subsequent lack of motivation for his studies resulted in his transfer to the disadvantaged Class 3-E.
Sugino is an energetic, friendly, and approachable teenager with a deep and abiding passion for baseball. He has a cheerful and happy disposition, which allows him to get along well with his classmates and form bonds easily. He is considered to have a talent for getting along with virtually anyone. While generally positive and encouraging, his initial lack of confidence in his pitching was a significant personal hurdle.
His primary motivation throughout the series is intrinsically linked to baseball. After being sidelined from his club, his goal is to regain his sense of purpose and prove his worth as a pitcher. This personal struggle becomes intertwined with the class’s mission to assassinate their teacher, Koro-sensei. He uses the daily assassination training as a way to improve his physical abilities, such as his knifework, and his tactical thinking, which in turn helps him develop as an athlete. After receiving guidance from Koro-sensei, who identified his unique wrist and elbow flexibility, Sugino dedicated himself to mastering breaking balls and change-ups to compensate for his lack of speed, successfully reintegrating baseball into his life.
In the story of Class 3-E, Sugino is a proactive and well-rounded participant in the assassination attempts. He is known to be the third-best in the class at knifework among the boys. He incorporates his baseball skills into his assassination techniques, such as throwing rocks with precision during combat or embedding anti-Koro-sensei pellets into baseballs. During the school’s baseball tournament, he serves as the ace pitcher and fourth batter for Class 3-E, leading his team to victory against his former club and its captain, Kazutaka Shindo. Following this match, he reconciles with Shindo, expressing pride in his new experiences and friendships in Class 3-E rather than focusing on the win itself. Beyond sports, Sugino also demonstrates unexpected artistic ability, being ranked third in art by Koro-sensei and showing talent in acting during a class play. His assassination skills are assessed as well-balanced, with notable strengths in action, leadership, and social skills.
Sugino has several key relationships within the class. He is one of Nagisa Shiota’s best friends, and the two are frequently seen together, planning strategies and walking to and from school. He shares a close bond with Nagisa, trusting him as his catcher during the baseball tournament. He harbors a shy and unreciprocated crush on his classmate, Yukiko Kanzaki, which is evident through his blushing and his delighted reaction to receiving obligatory chocolate from her on Valentine’s Day. He initially viewed the volatile Karma Akabane with some wariness but came to accept him as a friend through Nagisa’s influence.
Throughout his time in Class 3-E, Sugino undergoes significant personal development. He overcomes the self-doubt that stemmed from his baseball failure, learning that talent is not one-dimensional and that his unique pitching style is a strength, not a weakness. His academic performance also improves dramatically; he rises from a low rank to the top 50 in his year, showing notable progress in his studies. When the class faces a schism over Koro-sensei’s fate, Sugino aligns with Nagisa’s faction. In the final narrative arc, he is proactive in researching ways to save Koro-sensei and participates in the class’s escape from government custody. Following graduation, Sugino continues to pursue his dream. He joins an amateur city baseball club and eventually becomes the ace pitcher for his university team. His mastery of breaking balls and varied pitches attracts the attention of professional scouts, leading him to a career as a professional baseball player after college.
Notable abilities include his expertise in pitching a variety of breaking balls, such as curves, sliders, and change-ups, which he uses to deceive batters despite his average pitch speed. He possesses a highly flexible wrist and elbow, allowing him to alter the speed and trajectory of a ball with precision. This skill is directly applied to his assassination techniques, making him effective at ranged attacks. He also ranks highly in close-quarters combat skills, specifically knifework, and is praised by his homeroom teacher for having no major weaknesses, with all his combat and support abilities being above average.
