Description
Osomatsu Matsuno is the eldest of the six identical Matsuno brothers and the title character of the franchise. Born on May 24, he is most easily recognized by his red hooded jacket, and among the brothers he is considered the baseline or average in appearance. Originally depicted as a mischievous school-age child, the adult-oriented reboot portrays him in his twenties, still living at home with his parents alongside his five brothers. Like all of them, he is unemployed and spends his days drifting through idle routines rather than pursuing steady work or independence.
In terms of personality, Osomatsu is fiery, self-confident, and pushy, and he habitually proclaims himself the leader of the sextuplets. He is regarded as a hooligan and a troublemaker, yet he is also said to be well liked by others because of his smooth and outgoing manner. His core traits are laziness and a pleasure-seeking nature, with a strong tendency to prioritize immediate enjoyment over long-term thinking. He avoids responsibility whenever possible and tends to deflect difficult or uncomfortable situations with jokes, distractions, or escape. He is impulsive, mischievous, and notably childish, with his behavior frequently described as retaining the heart of an elementary school student. He also has a dramatic, self-deprecating side, often downplaying himself in a performative way for comedic effect. Within the group, his unruly conduct often breaks the expected order and pulls his more sensible brothers into chaos.
Osomatsu's motivations revolve mainly around the pursuit of fun and the avoidance of work. He resists the social pressure to become a conventional working adult, and he has little interest in ambition or self-improvement. He values maintaining the status quo of the household and is resistant to changes that might separate him from his brothers. He is also drawn to gambling, with pachinko and horse racing among his favorite pastimes, and he holds a long-standing crush on Totoko, the local idol figure, competing for her attention even though his attempts consistently fail.
Within the story, Osomatsu functions as the eldest brother and self-appointed leader of the sextuplets. Although he often claims this position, he rarely lives up to it, and his authority is largely hollow; his influence tends to create disorder rather than direction. Structurally, he serves as the series' anti-growth figure, deliberately refusing the narrative expectation that he should mature, find a job, or become responsible. His stagnation is treated as a source of comedy, and episodes frequently center on his schemes, his failed attempts at job hunting, or his clashes with the realities of adult life. Even so, in moments of genuine crisis he can rally his brothers and show flashes of leadership, suggesting that the capability exists beneath his lethargy.
His relationships with his five younger brothers form the heart of the series. With Choromatsu, who is the most sensible and responsible of the six, Osomatsu's recklessness creates constant friction, and he often teases, sabotages, or drags Choromatsu into his schemes. With Karamatsu, he tends to ridicule his brother's self-dramatizing tendencies while still including him in chaotic activities. His dynamic with Ichimatsu is marked by a combination of closeness and emotional distance, with neither brother pushing too deeply into the other's affairs. With Jyushimatsu and Todomatsu, he participates in the general roughhousing, teasing, and occasional cruelty that defines the family's interactions, but the brothers ultimately share a strong sense of unity, even sharing a single long sleeping mat at night. His bond with his parents is also notable: his father is essentially the household's only earner, while his mother cheerfully refers to her sons as NEETs.
As a character, Osomatsu undergoes very little genuine development, and that lack of change is itself a deliberate feature of the series. There are occasional moments of self-awareness and sincerity, and some storylines see him and his brothers resolve to take job hunting seriously, but such efforts tend to collapse or revert to the previous status quo. These brief glimpses of sincerity suggest an underlying warmth beneath his careless exterior.
In terms of notable abilities, Osomatsu is the strongest fighter among the sextuplets, with impressive skills in hand-to-hand combat that occasionally prove useful during the brothers' misadventures. He is also a smooth talker whose charm helps him get along with others despite his reputation as a rough character. He sometimes employs clever tactics in comedic schemes, but his talents are consistently undermined by his own self-sabotage, impulsiveness, and lack of direction, and his fighting ability is most often used to amplify the absurd situations he lands in rather than to accomplish anything meaningful.
