Description
Jonson is a giant creature that originated as an ordinary insect, likely a cockroach, which mutated into a massive monster after being exposed to the polluted sewer water of the city known as the Hole. The water was contaminated with magical smoke residue, which caused his dramatic transformation. At approximately two years old, Jonson stands 2 meters and 68 centimeters tall, weighing 271 kilograms. His appearance is that of an overgrown brown-skinned cockroach, though some depictions show him as more grey in color. Unlike a normal insect, he possesses a large black head with a beak-like mouth that is lined with human teeth. One of his most peculiar features is that he wears a pair of ripped sneakers on his feet.
In terms of personality, Jonson initially behaved as a frightening monster that would devour anyone who wandered into the sewers without hesitation. However, after coming under the care of Professor Kasukabe, he was trained and became docile and rather friendly. Through the use of electric waves that only insects can perceive, Kasukabe was able to teach Jonson manners and even a single word: Shocking. Over time, he genuinely came to care for Kasukabe and behaved much like a loyal dog toward him. Despite his intimidating size and past aggression, Jonson demonstrates intelligence on par with a young child.
Jonson was originally kept by a human from the Hole who aspired to become a magic user. This man believed he could achieve his goal by killing people and extracting something called Black Pearls from their bodies, using Jonson to dispose of the corpses by eating them. During a stormy night, this owner kidnapped Nikaido from a hospital to harvest her Black Pearl, and Kaiman followed them into the sewers. There, Kaiman was attacked by the now-enormous Jonson, who proved to be incredibly powerful. Kaiman knives broke against Jonson tough exoskeleton, and the giant insect was able to wound Kaiman with no effort. After the owner was killed, the giant cockroach remained in the sewers until Professor Kasukabe took him into his lab. The scientist studied Jonson out of interest in his strange biology and eventually trained him to be companionable.
Jonson serves a supporting role in the story as a companion to Professor Kasukabe. He follows the professor on various adventures, including being present when the character Aikawa transforms into the decomposed Ai Coleman at En mansion. When Coleman went berserk and attacked Kasukabe, Jonson was severely injured, with his guts ripped out, but he was saved by Kasukabe wife, Haru, and apparently recovered. His key relationship is with Kasukabe, who acts as his caretaker and trainer, but he has also interacted with other main characters such as Kaiman and Nikaido. On one occasion, he even played as a center fielder on a baseball team alongside them, much to Kaiman horror and disgust.
Jonson possesses several notable abilities. His exoskeleton is extremely sturdy and resistant, capable of withstanding attacks that would damage normal creatures. He is quite strong and fast despite his large size, and he can fly using his wings. He has the ability to communicate with other, smaller insects, allowing him to direct them to perform tasks such as opening locks. He is sensitive to insecticides and cigarette smoke, which are weaknesses. Although he can speak only the single word Shocking, this limited vocabulary is a result of Kasukabe training rather than a lack of intelligence. Jonson development shows a clear arc from a mindless, aggressive monster to a tame and loyal companion, demonstrating that even a creature born from polluted and magical circumstances can be rehabilitated through patient care and understanding.
