ONA
Description
Aikawa is a magic user and a central figure in the complex history of the series, primarily known as the enigmatic best friend of the sorcerer Risu. He is a tall individual, standing over two meters, with an incredibly muscular build and short, spiky black hair. His most consistent attire includes a black hoodie, white pants, and combat boots. He almost always wears a distinctive metal baseball cap backwards and often conceals his entire face with a black gas mask, making his identity a persistent mystery to those around him.
Aikawa possesses a personality that is, on the surface, straightforward and lazy. He is arrogant and stubborn, especially regarding things he does not want to discuss or do. He has a massive appetite and a generally carefree, fun-loving demeanor, yet he is not malicious. He hails from a brutal world and has no problem using lethal force against those who get in his way, though he avoids unnecessary conflict when possible. Despite his casual ruthlessness, he has a notable dislike for bullies and will instinctively protect the weak or helpless, often asking for a meal in return as thanks. His deepest and most genuine care is reserved for his best friend, Risu, for whom he shows a constant, if unspoken, worry.
His motivations are deeply entangled with his fractured sense of self and his relationship with a sinister entity within him. From a young age, Aikawa was aware that his body was inhabited by a powerful and malevolent presence. Too scared to confront this truth, he chose a life of blissful ignorance, silently cooperating with the entity in exchange for money and a place to live, while it periodically used his body to kill other magic users. His primary driving force becomes protecting Risu from this inner horror, a goal that puts him in constant conflict with the entity that seeks to consume those he cares about.
Aikawa's role in the story is that of a pivotal figure whose past actions directly shape the main narrative. He is revealed to be one of several alter-egos sharing a single, unique body. The most prominent of these other identities are Kaiman, the lizard-headed protagonist, and a psychotic killer known as Kai or the Cross-Eyes Boss. Aikawa is essentially Kaiman's original personality before a series of traumatic events and magical interference fractured his mind. His history is uncovered through the investigations of other characters, revealing that he and Risu were students together at a magical training school in the sorcerers' world. Their friendship was shattered when the entity inside Aikawa possessed him to kill Risu and steal his powerful magic.
Key relationships define Aikawa's existence. His bond with Risu is the most significant, representing his only genuine human connection. This friendship is tragic, as Aikawa knows he is the one who murdered Risu, even if he was not in control. Another critical relationship is with Nikaido, Kaiman's partner. She recognizes Aikawa's voice and body shape as identical to Kaiman's, leading to tense encounters where he denies any knowledge of her or the name Kaiman, even as his actions betray a hidden familiarity. His relationship with his own other selves is not one of camaraderie but of coexistence and horror, as he is a prisoner in a body shared with a monster.
Aikawa undergoes significant development as the truth of his nature is forced into the open. Initially living in denial, he eventually acknowledges that he is merely a puppet for the entity called Hole. This realization drives him to a state of despair, leading him to attempt suicide by stabbing himself repeatedly in an effort to also kill the entity inside him. This act, known as Aikawa's Breakdown, marks his lowest point. However, he later reconciles with the other aspects of himself, particularly the original personality Ai Coleman, and comes to terms with his past. In the final stages of the story, he willingly accepts his death at the hands of Risu, believing it to be the only way to finally destroy the malevolent Hole and free both of them from its influence.
In terms of abilities, Aikawa is a physical powerhouse. He possesses immense strength, capable of tearing a man's head off with his bare hands or punching dents into concrete, and he is extraordinarily fast and acrobatic. He is a master of knife combat, able to disarm and dismember opponents in the blink of an eye. He also has a potent, unexplained healing factor that allows him to recover from severe wounds in a matter of days without scarring. Though he is classified as a magic user, he was a third-rank sorcerer who could not produce enough smoke to actually use any magic. His true, terrifying power comes from the entity inside him. When this entity, later identified as Hole, takes control, it can steal the magical powers of other sorcerers, most notably the ability to turn anything into mushrooms, a power it uses with devastating efficiency.
