ONA
Description
Chōta is a memorable supporting character from the dark fantasy series. A towering and muscular man standing approximately 198 centimeters tall, he possesses a distinctly feminine manner of speaking along with tastes and thought patterns that are considered very girlish. Beneath his imposing physique, his eyes are noted to be quite beautiful, and without his mask he is regarded as rather handsome. He typically conceals his features behind a mask sculpted in the shape of a bird's head, which has become his most recognizable visual trait.
Chōta's background is marked by a significant and failed medical procedure driven by his deep admiration for En, the powerful sorcerer and crime boss he serves. He underwent surgery intended to allow him to emit smoke from his mouth, a modification he desired in his devotion to En, but the operation was a failure. The procedure left him with a large and prominent scar, forcing him to wear his mask at all times. As a result of this botched surgery, while he can still exhale a small amount of smoke from his mouth, a portion of it flows back into him and causes self-inflicted damage, so he avoids doing so regularly. Instead, his smoke emanates from holes in his hands. This smoke possesses a rare and valuable ability: it can dispel and neutralize magic, and it can also be used to dismantle locks, demonstrating a precise application of his power.
Personality-wise, Chōta is defined by his obsessive and unyielding devotion to En. He proudly considers himself En's ideal partner, a fantasy he pursues with single-minded determination. Even when En, in his characteristic fashion, transmutes Chōta's head into a mushroom, Chōta interprets it positively, finding that the mushroom carries En's scent and resolving to endure the condition rather than be dissuaded. This intense loyalty, however, frequently manifests as extreme jealousy toward anyone who gets close to En. This is most prominently directed at Nikaido, who becomes En's partner. Chōta's jealousy leads him to engage in persistent and often dangerous harassment, including offering Nikaido poisoned tea and setting up traps, such as arranging for a bowling ball to fall on her head. He actively undermines her, attempting to prevent her from recovering her contract with En and even going so far as to kick her while she is dying, hoping for her demise.
Within the story, Chōta acts as a prominent member of the En family. While his primary role is as a loyal, if troublesome, subordinate, he also provides moments of dark comedy through his petty cruelties and melodramatic behavior. His journey includes significant physical hardships, such as becoming stranded and emaciated after being caught in a tree following a chaotic flight with Kikurage. Later, after being struck by a god-like power, he is reduced to only a head and must rely on other characters like Fujita and Turkey, during which time he is involved in creating a doll of Ebisu and attempting to heal Noi. Despite the rocky nature of their relationship, En demonstrates a degree of genuine trust in Chōta, once remarking that Chōta is the one person to whom he could entrust Kikurage, indicating that beneath the harsh treatment, there is a foundation of reliability. In the epilogue of the series, Chōta is restored to his full body, and he continues to serve as an executive in the revived En family, focusing his efforts on the restoration of the wizard world.
