Description
Kara, whose full name is Lah Kara, is the central protagonist in the sequel short The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope, which continues her journey from the first volume of the anthology. Her background establishes her as a Force-sensitive human, the daughter of the legendary lightsaber smith Lah Zhima. She is a young Jedi in training, having been tasked by the Margrave Juro with delivering her father's crafted lightsabers to a new generation of Force-users in an effort to revive the Jedi Order.
In this volume, Kara's personality is defined by introspection, perseverance, and a deep-seated uncertainty about her own path. She is a Jedi in name but is portrayed as not yet one in spirit, grappling with a lack of confidence in the shadow of fear. Her character is marked by effort and mindfulness rather than a sense of destiny or inherited greatness. She is compassionate, evidenced by her decision to help a lost droid, and shows resilience when confronted by the forces that continue to pursue her and the other Jedi.
Kara's primary motivation is to reunite with her father and the other escaped Jedi while evading the Jedi Hunters who seek to eliminate them. Her immediate goal in the short is survival after being separated from her group. Her role in the story sees her as a lone survivor, adrift in space, who is rescued by a service droid named Teto. The narrative focuses on her internal journey of rebuilding her confidence and learning to trust herself without a master to guide her. She is challenged to find hope from within, which is framed as a practice rather than a bestowed gift.
The key relationship in this chapter of her story is with Teto, the droid who saves her. Their dynamic forms a unique, found mentorship. Both are without their masters, and they form a bond built on empathy and blunt practicality. Teto’s loyalty and straightforward compassion help guide Kara, and through helping him, she confronts her own fears. Her development throughout the narrative is subtle but profound. She does not achieve a grand victory but instead experiences a quiet mental and emotional shift, moving from a place of hesitation and being outmatched to one of readiness and renewed self-assurance by the time she reunites with her allies.
Her notable abilities include her connection to the Force and her training as a Jedi, which allows her to wield a lightsaber. However, her combat skills are depicted as limited; she is clearly outmatched by her pursuers and fights more to survive than to achieve a definitive win. Her most significant ability in this story is her capacity for mindfulness and perseverance, learning to listen, feel, and trust in herself when no external guidance is available.
