Description
Arashi Nagase is a central supporting character in Paradise Kiss, known for his punk rock aesthetic and volatile personality. As a third-year student in the costume department at the Yazawa School of Art, he is one of the core members of the independent fashion label Paradise Kiss, primarily responsible for the intricate sewing and sweatshop work required to bring the group's ambitious designs to life. His appearance is striking and rebellious, featuring bleached blond hair spiked up with wax, numerous piercings on his face and ears, and a tattoo on his right shoulder. His fashion sense leans heavily into punk style, incorporating ripped jeans, band shirts, plaid patterns, and bold stripes.

Arashi comes from a musical family, as his mother is Risa Kanzaki, a musician and a good friend of Mikako Kouda from the neighboring series Gokinjo Monogatari. This background heavily influences his passion for music; he is constantly listening to music, reading music magazines, and performing with his band, The Babys. Music is described as being his life, and he would pursue it as a full-time career if given the opportunity.

His personality is a complex mix of abrasiveness and surprising sincerity. On the surface, Arashi is cynical, hot-headed, and prone to outbursts of yelling and even breaking objects when angered. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and is quick to voice his opinions, often clashing with the group's leader, George, over his impractical and outlandish ideas. However, despite his rough exterior, he serves as the voice of reason within Paradise Kiss. Unlike the more eccentric members, Arashi thinks realistically and often grounds the group in practicality, making him surprisingly reliable and sincere among the fashion students. Beneath his tough demeanor, he is deeply protective and loyal to his friends, caring for them even when he struggles to express it tenderly.

Arashi's primary motivations and character depth are revealed through his intense, often troubled relationship with Miwako Sakurada. The two have been friends since childhood alongside Hiroyuki Tokumori, forming a close-knit trio. Arashi was always competitive with the kinder and more conventionally perfect Hiroyuki for Miwako's affections. The background of their relationship is dark; unable to control his jealousy and desire, Arashi forced himself on Miwako during adolescence. While she eventually gave in and they became a couple, the incident left Arashi consumed by guilt and insecurity. He firmly believes he is a worse person than Hiroyuki and that Miwako settled for him out of obligation, a fear that fuels his obsessive possessiveness.

Throughout the story, this insecurity manifests as extreme jealousy. He becomes paranoid about Miwako reconnecting with Hiroyuki, going so far as to search her phone and destroy it in a fit of rage when he discovers she has been in contact with him. His controlling behavior is a central source of tension, yet it is also shown that Miwako genuinely loves him and accepts his flaws. This dynamic reveals Arashi's vulnerability; he loves Miwako wholeheartedly but has a hard time showing it in non-physical ways, constantly fearing she will leave him for someone better.

Despite his prickly nature, Arashi has notable abilities beyond his sewing skills. He is a talented musician, singer, and guitarist. In a rare moment of emotional vulnerability, he performs a heartfelt song for Miwako, demonstrating a softer, more pure side that contrasts sharply with his typical aggressive behavior. This moment highlights that for him, his connection with Miwako is about more than just physical intimacy.

In his role within the Paradise Kiss group, Arashi often acts as the reluctant realist. He is frequently exasperated by George's eccentricities and strange flirtations, which sometimes lead to yelling or physical confrontations. However, he retains a grudging respect for George's genius as a designer. He also quickly assumes a protective role over Yukari Caroline Hayasaka when she joins the group as their model, offering her his apartment when she runs away from home and warning her about George's romantic nature.

Over the course of the series, Arashi experiences a degree of development. While his jealous tendencies remain, he is forced to confront the guilt of his past actions and the damage his insecurity causes. By the conclusion of the narrative, it is revealed that he and Miwako eventually marry and have a daughter together, suggesting a long-term commitment that moves beyond the tumultuous dynamics of their teenage years.
