Description
Conny Springer hails from Ragako village inside Wall Rose. Driven to bring pride to his family and village, he enlists in the military. He graduates 8th in the 104th Training Corps, demonstrating skill with vertical maneuvering equipment despite struggling academically and occasionally confusing left and right. Initially set on the Military Police, he joins the Survey Corps after Eren Yeager’s impassioned speech about battling Titans.
Physically, he begins as one of the shortest cadets at 158 cm, with a slim build, gray eyes, and shaved brown hair. By 854, he reaches about 180 cm tall, his hair slightly longer and his facial features sharper. He wears standard military uniforms and the Survey Corps cloak on missions, adopting a black uniform with specialized gear during the Raid on Liberio.
His early personality is outgoing and impetuous, prone to slacking off in training. He often goofs around with his close friend Sasha Blouse and boasts about his natural abilities. After confronting Titans in the Battle of Trost District, his naive enthusiasm fades, though he retains underlying optimism and fierce loyalty. Key moments include defending Armin Arlert from abandonment, aiding Mikasa Ackerman during a gas shortage, and helping recapture headquarters.
Tragedy reshapes him profoundly. The destruction of Ragako reveals his entire family and neighbors were transformed into Pure Titans by the Beast Titan. Discovering his mother immobilized as a Titan whispering "welcome home" devastates him, igniting a thirst for vengeance. This event advances Titan research, confirming their human origins and highlighting his mother’s unique survival inside the Walls. Further betrayals and losses, especially Sasha’s death, erode his optimism. He grows increasingly prone to anger and hatred. This culminates in his attempt to feed Falco Grice to his Titan mother to restore her humanity; he kidnaps Falco, lies about medical treatment, and holds a blade to his throat before stopping, realizing his mother would condemn the act.
His brief Pure Titan form stands tall enough to reach the Armored Titan’s head, featuring exposed teeth and gums due to missing flesh around the cheekbones and upper lip. Beyond comic relief, Conny symbolizes the "everyman" among exceptional peers, embodying innocence eroded by war. He navigates grief and moral ambiguity, seen when burning comrades' corpses after Trost or questioning survival after Titan clashes. His emotional ties within the 104th Cadet Corps—Reiner Braun’s protective instincts, Annie Leonhart’s inadvertent sacrifices for him, and Bertolt Hoover’s guilt over their friendship—underscore his role as a moral compass for antagonists.
