Description
Bartolomeo, also known by his epithet "Bartolomeo the Cannibal," is a prominent character introduced as a super rookie and a participant in the Corrida Colosseum tournament. He is the captain of the Barto Club and later becomes the captain of the second ship of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Hailing from Loguetown in the East Blue, Bartolomeo is a tall, lean, yet muscular man standing 220 centimeters tall, recognizable by his unusual appearance which includes a light green, wild mohawk hairstyle, no visible eyebrows, a demonic-looking face with sharp fangs, and a ring piercing through his nasal septum. He has two curved line tattoos under his right eye and a large, distinctive dark tattoo on his chest featuring a winged, fanged design.
Bartolomeo possesses a deeply dualistic personality. To the general public and the World Government, he is infamous for his brutal, vulgar, and sadistic nature, having earned his nickname from acts such as broadcasting footage of pirates being skewered and burned alive, as well as bombarding innocent civilians. His laid-back and provocative demeanor, which includes taunting opponents and urinating in public during a major tournament, has led to him being voted number one on the list of "pirates most wished to disappear". However, this cruel exterior masks an intense and sincere admiration for the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly their captain, Monkey D. Luffy. Bartolomeo is deeply loyal, valuing camaraderie and honor above all else, as demonstrated when he risked his life to save a former enemy, Bellamy, declaring that anyone who has shared fists in the same arena is a comrade who he will not abandon.
Bartolomeo's motivations are directly tied to witnessing a pivotal moment in Luffy's journey. As a former underworld boss who controlled over 150 towns in the East Blue, his life changed forever when he observed Luffy's defiant and fearless attitude on the execution stand in Loguetown, followed by the miraculous lightning strike that saved him. Convinced that Luffy was destined to become the Pirate King, Bartolomeo abandoned his criminal empire and took to the seas as a pirate, dedicating his entire existence to following and eventually serving his hero. He entered the Corrida Colosseum tournament specifically to win the Flame-Flame Fruit (Mera Mera no Mi) as a gift for Luffy, hoping to gain his respect.
In the story, Bartolomeo plays a crucial role as a powerful and steadfast ally during the Dressrosa arc. After winning the B block of the tournament, he pledges his loyalty to Luffy and fights alongside the Straw Hats against the Donquixote Pirates. Despite Luffy's initial refusal to have underlings, Bartolomeo, along with six other pirate captains, unilaterally decides to form the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, with his own Barto Club serving as the second ship. He remains an ardent supporter, transporting the Straw Hats to Zou and continuing his activities in the New World, which includes a reckless but bold declaration of war against the Red Hair Pirates by burning their flag, unaware of their friendly connection to his idol.
Key relationships define Bartolomeo's character. His most significant relationship is with the entire Straw Hat crew, whom he reverently addresses as "senpai" (or "前辈" in Chinese sources). He has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of their exploits, from Alabasta to Enies Lobby, and becomes emotionally overwhelmed, often crying with joy, in their presence. He shares a notable rivalry and camaraderie with Cavendish, another captain of the Grand Fleet, with the two frequently arguing but cooperating effectively in battle. He also formed an unexpected bond with Bellamy after saving his life. Within his own crew, he is a caring, if unconventional, leader; his crew members are childhood friends who share his fanaticism, but their lack of basic sailing skills, including having no navigator, forces them to call a grandmother back home for advice on the high seas.
Bartolomeo is a Devil Fruit user who has consumed the Barrier-Barrier Fruit (Bari Bari no Mi), a Paramecia-type fruit. By crossing his fingers, he can generate a transparent, nearly indestructible barrier. This barrier can withstand immensely powerful attacks, including the legendary King Punch capable of knocking out an Emperor, and even resist the compression of Doflamingo's Birdcage. The barriers are versatile; they can be shaped into stairs for traversal, formed into a sphere to completely isolate someone, or propelled forward as a powerful offensive ram known as the Barrier Bull. The primary weaknesses of this ability are that only one barrier can be created at a time, and if an opponent prevents him from crossing his fingers, he cannot generate the barrier at all. In addition to his Devil Fruit powers, Bartolomeo is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, and he has developed a technique called Barrier Barrier Pistol, where he encases his fist in a small barrier to deliver a powerful punch, a clear homage to Luffy's signature move.
