Description
Carole, one of the two central characters from the anime Carole & Tuesday, is a seventeen-year-old girl living in Alba City on Mars. She was born on Earth on December 25th and is an orphan, having been abandoned on the steps of a church as a baby. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father was arrested for a crime of self-defense, forcing her to be left at the church to survive. To support herself in the bustling metropolis, she works a series of short-lived part-time jobs, often finding herself fired due to her straightforward and uncompromising nature. Her primary mode of transportation is an electric unicycle, and she lives in a modest apartment with her pet, a small AI owl named Ziggy who also functions as an alarm clock.

Carole has a bright, outgoing, and resilient personality, hardened by her difficult life as an independent orphan. She is determined, quick-witted, and possesses a strong sense of self-respect. She is a nice, patient, and inviting girl, traits that help her form a deep bond with her eventual partner, Tuesday. Despite her friendliness, she maintains a surprisingly limited social circle, with Tuesday becoming her first true friend who understands her. Carole has a big sister instinct and becomes protective of Tuesday, who is more sheltered and timid. She has a berserk button regarding being called ugly, a reaction that has persisted since her childhood when she would get into fights over the insult. This fiery and unapologetic side also leads her to sabotage the food of rude or lecherous customers at her workplace, an act of defiance that typically results in her termination. She enjoys the smell of the river and has a love for exploring different foods.

Her primary motivation is a deep-seated passion for music, which she pursues despite living in an era where most music is created by artificial intelligence. While working to survive, she spends her free time playing her keyboard and composing her own songs. Her dream is not for fame or fortune but simply to express herself and connect with others through her art. This dream feels unattainable until she meets Tuesday Simmons, a runaway from a wealthy family, on a bridge. When Tuesday is moved to tears by Carole's unfinished song, the two quickly recognize a kindred spirit in one another. Carole decides to let Tuesday stay with her, and together they write their first song, The Loneliest Girl, forming a musical partnership that becomes the core of her life.

In the story, Carole is the grounded and streetwise half of the titular duo. While Tuesday provides the lyrics, Carole is the composer, playing piano and keyboard. Her role is to be the anchor to reality, using her street smarts and experience to navigate the challenges of the music industry, from dealing with arrogant DJs to surviving the amateur competition circuit. Along with Tuesday, she is reluctantly taken under the wing of Gus, a washed-up and eccentric manager who sees genuine potential in them. Carole’s role as a musician is defined by her refusal to use AI, instead relying on raw human emotion and talent. Her music is influenced by R&B, folk, and jazz, drawing inspiration from powerful female vocalists.

Key relationships define Carole’s journey. Her bond with Tuesday is the most significant, as it is one of mutual creation and emotional support. Where Carole is cynical and practical, Tuesday is hopeful and naive, and they balance each other perfectly, bringing out the best in their songwriting. Gus serves as a flawed but dedicated father-like figure who believes in them, and he provides a crucial connection to the music world. Carole also meets her childhood idol, the singer Flora, who has fallen from grace. Taking Flora in, Carole sees both a validation of her dreams and a cautionary tale about the destructive potential of the music industry. This experience reinforces her desire to stay true to herself and her art.

Carole undergoes significant development throughout the series. Initially a cynical loner who trusts no one and expects to be let down, her life changes when she opens her home and heart to Tuesday. She learns to collaborate, to trust others, and to believe that her dream might be possible. As the duo gains fame, she is forced to confront difficult choices about artistic integrity versus commercial success, ultimately choosing to stay independent to protect the soul of their music. From a girl struggling to keep her apartment’s power on, she grows into a confident and determined artist fighting for a place in a world dominated by AI.

Carole’s notable abilities lie almost entirely in her musical talent. She is a highly skilled pianist and keyboardist, able to compose complex and emotionally resonant melodies that form the backbone of the duo’s songs. Her voice is also a powerful instrument, full of soul and grit that complements Tuesday’s softer tone. Beyond music, her primary ability is her resilience and streetwise intelligence. She is a survivor, capable of handling herself in tough situations and thinking on her feet, whether it is evading security guards or dealing with aggressive competitors. Her distinctive red overalls and tomboyish ponytail have become her signature look, symbolizing her hardworking and unpretentious nature.
