Description
Qifrey is a young witch who serves as the master of his own atelier and the teacher of four apprentices, including Coco, the central character of Witch Hat Atelier. He is a former apprentice of Beldaruit, a member of the Council of Three Sages, which places him within one of the most distinguished lines of magical instruction in the witch world. Qifrey is a young man with white hair and blue eyes, and he typically wears white robes fastened with brass-colored ornaments, black boots, and a pointed hat with a long black ribbon. His most distinctive feature is a pair of small glasses fixed to his face, with a clear left lens and a dark right lens that conceal a missing right eye and the scar left behind by it.
In his role as a teacher, Qifrey is gentle, patient, and highly attentive to the individual needs of his students. He adapts his lessons to each apprentice rather than forcing them through a single method, recognizing that Coco needs strong fundamentals, Agott responds to rigor and earned confidence, Tetia benefits from direction, and Richeh requires independence and personal expression. He encourages students who doubt themselves, allows room for mistakes, and teaches magic as a craft of careful observation, precise drawing, and thoughtful revision. He is also strongly protective of his apprentices, showing hostility toward outside threats such as the Easthies and resisting the authority of the Knights Moralis when their rules would harm those under his care.
Beneath this warm and approachable exterior, Qifrey carries a deeply buried personal trauma. As a young boy, he was taken by the Brimmed Caps, a group of rogue witches who practice forbidden magic. They took his right eye and his memories, planted a parasitic silverwood tree in the empty socket, and buried him alive in a coffin in the Forest of Thristas, where he nearly drowned as rainwater filled the container. He was rescued by the Knights Moralis and Beldaruit, who insisted on taking him in as an apprentice despite opposition. His glasses were specially made to hide the scar and missing eye and to protect his remaining eye from bright light. Because of the near-drowning, Qifrey developed a genuine fear of water and a strong dislike of getting wet, which he confronted by mastering water magic until it became his greatest specialty, allowing him to control water and keep it away from himself.
This traumatic past fuels his central motivation. Qifrey is obsessed with locating the Brimmed Caps, and this buried resentment sometimes overrides his usual caution. His decision to accept Coco as an apprentice was not purely selfless; initially, he saw her as a reliable lead to the Brimmed Caps, since she had encountered a masked witch who sold her a forbidden magic book. This hidden agenda creates tension throughout the story, as his genuine care for his students coexists with a private goal that occasionally leads him to make risky or morally complicated choices. Over time, however, his relationship with Coco grows from a calculated arrangement into a sincere bond between master and apprentice.
As a child recovering in the Great Hall, Qifrey was gloomy and isolated. He developed a close friendship with Olruggio, another young witch who saved him from drowning after he walked into the ocean. Their relationship was initially strained by Qifrey's rejection of kindness, but shared adventures and a growing trust turned them into lifelong companions. Olruggio later became the Watchful Eye for Qifrey's atelier, a role meant to ensure that Qifrey follows the rules and does not go too far in his search for the Brimmed Caps. This dynamic highlights that even his closest friend acknowledges the dangerous side of his obsession. Further revelations about Qifrey's past involve the silverwood parasite taking root whenever he feels comfort, forcing a painful choice in which Olruggio offered to have his own memories erased to keep Qifrey from succumbing, with the two exchanging hat tassels as a symbolic reminder of their bond. Qifrey eventually settled in his own atelier in the Naakiwan Downs, where he took in Agott, Tetia, and Richeh before later adding Coco to his household.
In the story, Qifrey acts as the turning point that allows Coco to pursue magic legitimately. When Coco accidentally uses a forbidden spell and turns her mother to crystal, Qifrey chooses to accept her as an apprentice rather than erase her memory, which is the standard rule for protecting magical secrecy. He provides her with robes, a hat, an ink wand, and the instruction she needs to understand the true nature of magic, while also shielding her from the institutional forces that would see her punished for her knowledge.
Qifrey's abilities mark him as a highly accomplished witch and a tactically inventive combatant. His signature magic is water manipulation, and he is regarded as a leading expert in the field within his circle. He can gather moisture from the air to create protective vapor bubbles, redirect water, and summon large water constructs for offensive purposes. He also wields a unique magical sword called Raincleaver, whose surface is covered in tiny seals that allow him to part or divert water with a single slash. He uses wind-based glyphs on his shoes to fly through the air, sometimes while carrying several of his apprentices. He is a master of glyph creation, drawing complex magical circles on the fly without needing verbal incantations, and he is skilled at reading spell structures, identifying where a drawing will fail, and applying efficient corrections under pressure. His other tools include Guard Briar Seeds, which rapidly grow into large tangled branches for defense, a notebook enchanted with shrinking magic that can be expanded from pocket size to massive scale, and the Palm Dragon Teacup, a magical invention of his that later came into the possession of Beldaruit. Known also for his intellectual brilliance and his inventive approach to spellcraft, Qifrey combines preparation, observation, and creative combinations of existing rules to make him one of the most capable and complex figures in the story.
