Description
Inutade is a supporting character in Delicious in Dungeon, known primarily as a young ogre retainer in the service of Shuro and his noble family. Her true name is Hijouhi, but she operates under the codename Inutade, a reference to a type of flowering plant, and is commonly called Tade by her companions. She is seventeen years old and originally from the Eastern Archipelago, bringing with her a distinct cultural background reflected in her combat style and appearance.
Inutade is exceptionally tall, standing approximately 195 centimeters, with a powerful and muscular build that surpasses even that of the orcs. Her ogre heritage is marked by two small horns on her forehead, and she has long black hair typically tied up in pigtails. She wears a partial suit of samurai-style armor, including shoulder guards and a chest plate, and fights using a massive spiked iron club known as a kanabō. A notable feature is the small mole-like tattoo beneath her left eye, which signifies her rank within the Nakamoto family's ninja organization. She is also missing one of her front teeth, a result of her time as a sumo wrestler.
Her background is one of hardship and rescue. Before becoming a retainer, Inutade worked as a sumo wrestler for gambling purposes, living in a harsh and degrading environment from a young age. During one of her matches, Shuro's father witnessed her skills and, wanting to give her a better life, bought her freedom and brought her into his household. This act of kindness left a profound impression on her; she holds Shuro's father in the highest regard, viewing him almost as a godlike figure for saving her from that life.
In terms of personality, Inutade stands out within Shuro's typically serious and disciplined party for being carefree, friendly, and somewhat simple-minded. She has a voracious appetite and becomes hungry very easily, with white rice being her favorite food. Despite her straightforward and occasionally slow-witted nature, she possesses an innate emotional intelligence and is known to offer sharp, honest advice about personal matters. She is fundamentally kind-hearted and gentle, forming a unique and close bond with the feline beastman Izutsumi, being one of the few people who truly connects with her. She also shows a softer side in her interactions with children, like the halfling Mickbell, whom she happily carries on her shoulders.
Her role in the story is primarily as a capable warrior in Shuro's group. She is one of the retainers who joins the expedition to rescue Falin from the depths of the dungeon. Her immense strength makes her a formidable fighter, able to contend with powerful monsters like giant sea serpents and even briefly hold her own against the physically mighty dwarf, Senshi. However, her straightforwardness can be a liability, as seen when Shuro orders her to capture the chimera version of Falin without harming her. Finding the task confusing and nearly impossible, she charges in unarmed and is swiftly knocked unconscious by a single blow from the chimera's tail, demonstrating the overwhelming power of their adversary.
Throughout the narrative, Inutade shows remarkable loyalty and a forgiving nature. Alongside her fellow retainer Hien, she apologizes to Shuro for failing him in battle, but is shocked when he thanks them and apologizes for his own rash behavior, revealing her perception of him as somewhat immature. In her relationships with the other retainers, she was closest to Asebi, whom she affectionately did chores for without complaint. When Asebi later escaped her servitude, Inutade did not hold a grudge; instead, she expressed happiness for her friend's freedom and a hope they would meet again, even if she did not fully understand the reasons for leaving.
Inutade's development is subtle, as she remains a consistent and steadfast presence. Her primary growth is demonstrated through her unwavering loyalty and resilience. She endures significant physical trauma, including a severe neck injury from the chimera, but survives thanks to her ogre toughness and calmly withstands the painful magical healing administered by Marcille. Her notable abilities are almost entirely physical. She possesses superhuman strength, allowing her to wield her heavy spiked club with ease, overpower most opponents, and withstand attacks that would be fatal to others. Her past as a sumo wrestler contributes to her balance and grappling skills, making her a formidable hand-to-hand combatant as well.
