Description
Mortimer Smith, referred to as Morty, is the fourteen-year-old grandson of Rick Sanchez and a central character in the anime series set between the fifth and sixth seasons of the original show. He lives with his parents Jerry and Beth and his older sister Summer in a suburban household that is frequently thrown into chaos by Rick’s inventions and interdimensional travels.

In this iteration, Morty retains his characteristic anxiety and awkwardness but is defined more strongly by his longing for love and normalcy. He is initially a passive follower of Rick, dragged into dangerous adventures against his will, but his arc shifts toward proactive agency as he becomes entangled in a temporal romance with a mysterious girl named Elle, who can manipulate time. His pursuit of Elle and his desire to be with her drive him to defy the cold logic of the universe and the expectations of his family.

Morty’s role in the story encompasses multiple parallel threads. He is the emotional anchor of the narrative, caught between the cosmic conflicts of the Galactic Federation and the Yakuza while searching for Rick after the scientist becomes lost in the multiverse. Alongside Summer, who assists him in the search, Morty transitions from a reluctant participant to a determined fighter for his own happiness. He also encounters two notable alternate versions of himself: Space Morty, an intergalactic hero whose life is explored in a separate timeline, and President Morty, a calculating leader of the Citadel.

Key relationships include his deep bond with Elle, which serves as the emotional core of the series; his complex, protective yet distant connection with Rick; and his supportive partnership with Summer. His development is marked by a growing willingness to stand up for what he believes in, moving from searching for Rick to searching for his own identity and purpose. He exhibits no special abilities beyond his increasing resilience, quick thinking, and emotional maturity, which allow him to navigate the surreal and often dangerous situations he faces.

Throughout the anime, Morty becomes more independent and morally assertive, learning to balance his inherent timidity with a newfound determination to shape his own destiny.
