Description
Boxxo is the central character of his story, a former human who met an unusual end and was reincarnated as a sentient vending machine in a fantasy world. In his previous life, he was a Japanese man with an all-consuming passion for vending machines, spending much of his income on them as a dedicated enthusiast. His death occurred during a traffic accident when he saw a vending machine falling from a truck and, driven by his obsession, rushed to catch it, only to be crushed by it instead. Upon awakening, he discovered he had been reborn in a dungeon-laden world, retaining all his memories and his encyclopedic knowledge of vending machines but now existing as a magical, animated vending machine.

His personality is defined by a consistent kindness and a benevolent, helpful nature. Despite the absurdity of his situation, Boxxo is thoughtful and resourceful, often putting himself at risk to protect his companions. He shows a great deal of care for those who treat him well, especially the people who befriend him, and is quick to use his unique abilities to solve problems, provide food, or support his allies in creative ways. While he demonstrates a generous spirit, he also possesses a practical and ethical side, sometimes limiting his own sales to prevent his high-quality goods from destroying the local economy or ruining other merchants' livelihoods. His primary motivation shifts over time. Initially, he likely desires to survive and perhaps find a way to return to human form. However, as he integrates into his new life, his focus turns to using his abilities to help those around him, and he becomes less interested in regaining his humanity, even as his close friend Lammis wishes for it.

Within the story, Boxxo serves as a vital support character for the adventurers and townsfolk he encounters. His most prominent role is as the constant companion of Lammis, a young hunter with immense strength. As a vending machine weighing over four hundred kilograms, Boxxo is immobile and relies on Lammis to carry him on her back, which conveniently helps her control her own superhuman power. Together, they form an effective team, exploring the dungeon and interacting with its various inhabitants. Boxxo's function is to provide an endless supply of modern food, drinks, and other goods in exchange for the local currency, which he converts into points to power himself, restock his inventory, and unlock new abilities.

Boxxo's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Lammis is the most significant; she is the first person to use him, gives him his name, and is his primary means of transportation. He is deeply devoted to her, and his actions are often motivated by a desire to help or protect her. Another important relationship is with Hulemy, a skilled magic item maker and Lammis's childhood friend. Hulemy is perceptive and is among the first to deduce that a human soul resides within Boxxo, and she becomes a close ally who understands his true nature. Through these connections, Boxxo forms strong bonds with the local community, gaining a reputation as a mysterious but benevolent magical device. He is generally trusting, though he can be wary of those with ill intentions, such as the leader of the Menagerie of Fools adventuring party, Kerioyl.

His development is marked by his increasing adaptation to his mechanical form. A crucial aspect of his existence is his limited communication, as he can only speak using a small set of pre-recorded vending machine phrases. He and Lammis develop a simple code, using Welcome to mean yes and Too bad to mean no. Over time, he learns to splice these phrases together to form more complex sentences, allowing for more nuanced conversation. Emotionally, his journey sees him moving from a state of shock and a desire to return to normalcy to a genuine acceptance of his role as a vending machine. By the end of the first major story arc, he comes to decide that life as a vending machine is not so bad, appreciating the connections he has made.

Boxxo possesses a wide array of notable abilities, all powered by a points system. He earns points whenever someone puts coins into him, and he passively loses points over time to power his functions. If he runs out of points, he will shut down entirely. His core ability is dispensing any item he purchased in his human life, which includes everything from canned drinks and instant noodles to more exotic fare like frozen food and fried chicken. He can transform his body into many different types of coin-operated machines, including a ramen noodle dispenser, a flower vending machine, an oxygen dispenser, a dry ice machine, and even a jukebox. For defense, he can generate a powerful impenetrable barrier around himself and his allies. He can also purchase upgrades such as increased durability, the ability to repair himself, and even telekinesis, which he uses to manipulate objects around him. In a moment of great need, he transformed into an automated external defibrillator and used his telekinesis to operate it and save the lives of two dying characters. His inventive nature also allows him to weaponize his products in self-defense, such as combining cola and Mentos-style candy to create a projectile.
