Description
Kusano is a parasitic creature that has taken over a human male host. He belongs to the faction of parasites led by Takeshi Hirokawa, a group that seeks to ensure the survival of their species while covertly preying on humans. Kusano appears during the middle portion of the anime adaptation, from episode 11 to episode 17.

His personality, like that of many fully integrated parasites, is characterized by cold rationality and a fundamental lack of human emotion. He approaches situations with a calculating mindset driven by instinctual survival imperatives rather than empathy or moral consideration. This makes him a loyal enforcer of the group’s early agenda, but it also leaves him inflexible when faced with parasites who deviate from that core drive.

Kusano’s primary motivation is the self-preservation of the parasite collective, as defined by Hirokawa’s leadership. He views cooperation with humans as a threat, and this worldview brings him into direct conflict with Reiko Tamura, a parasite scientist who experiments with human integration and eventually carries a human child. For Kusano, Reiko represents a dangerous aberration that must be eliminated.

Within the story, Kusano serves as a secondary antagonist and a foil to Reiko Tamura. His most notable act is turning against her and openly challenging her, a confrontation that mirrors the antagonistic role he played in the original manga. This conflict underscores the ideological fracture within the parasite faction and provides a key test of Reiko’s own evolved strength and convictions.

In terms of relationships, Kusano operates as a subordinate of Takeshi Hirokawa and as an enemy to Reiko. His interactions with other characters are mostly limited to the inner circle of the parasite organization, and his arc contributes to the larger narrative of parasite politics and survival.

Kusano’s development is brief but impactful. He arrives as a committed member of the parasite hierarchy, and his rigid adherence to a pure survival instinct leads him to a fatal confrontation. His defeat—or, more broadly, the failure of his challenge—marks a turning point in the struggle between parasites who cling to their original nature and those who begin to change.

Notable abilities include the standard parasite powers of shapeshifting and cellular manipulation. Kusano can transform his head and upper body into bladed or hardened forms for offense and defense, as well as detect the unique signals emitted by other parasites and produce his own identifying signal. These abilities make him a physically formidable opponent, though his lack of adaptability limits his long-term survival in a world where the lines between human and parasite are blurring.
