Description
Despa is a character from the second anime series, Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage, and serves as a significant figure in the broader story of the Ranking of Kings universe. He is a native of the underworld and the younger brother of Desha, the King of the Underworld. The two brothers also have another sibling, Ouken, whose tragic condition becomes a central motivating factor for the family.
In terms of personality, Despa is a man of striking contrasts. He is depicted as handsome with sharp, well-defined features, a physical trait that makes him very popular with women and, amusingly, a source of deep jealousy for his older brother. This vanity is matched by a very open and almost comical materialism. Despa becomes easily excitable at the sight of gold or money, a trait he does not bother to hide, often leading to humorous situations where his greed is put on display. Despite these seemingly superficial qualities, he possesses a sharp wit, a self-deprecating sense of humor, and a profound sense of responsibility toward his family and students.
His background is rooted in the dark history of the underworld. Despa, Desha, and Ouken are the sons of the previous king, Satun, a tyrant who conducted horrific experiments on his own people and children in a quest to achieve immortality. While Desha inherited powerful combat abilities like lightning manipulation and Ouken was cursed with a broken form of immortality, Despa inherited only a minute fraction of his father's supernatural powers, making him physically very weak. However, what he lacks in personal combat strength, he more than compensates for with an extraordinary, perhaps even superhuman, talent for strategy, tactics, and, most importantly, coaching.
This talent as a mentor is his primary role in the story. Despa is the instructor who takes on Bojji, the deaf and physically weak prince, as a student. While others saw Bojji as hopeless, Despa quickly analyzed his unique strengths, such as his incredible agility and ability to read opponents' movements. He cleverly devised a training regimen and fighting style that turned Bojji's perceived weaknesses into assets, giving him a needle-thin sword and teaching him to target pressure points and use an opponent's own force against them. In this way, Despa is a pivotal figure in Bojji’s growth, helping him unlock his hidden potential and gain confidence. His reputation as a coach is well-established, as he also mentored skilled fighters like Bebin, a member of the underworld's "Big Four".
Despa's key relationships define his motivations and actions. His bond with his brothers, particularly Desha, is central. Though they bicker and Desha envies Despa's popularity, they share a deep mutual respect and care for one another. They even have a unique, almost telepathic method of communicating over long distances by placing a hand to their mouths. Despa's primary motivation throughout the story is to help his family. He is driven to find a solution to Ouken's immortality curse, which has driven their brother to madness. While Desha takes the burden of kingship and makes dangerous pacts in the divine treasure vault to save Ouken, Despa works actively in the background, embarking on a journey to find Ouken's severed head and later taking over the management of the underworld to support his brother. Another important relationship is with his loyal horse, White King, a powerful steed that only allows Despa to ride him. When Despa retired from active service, he returned the horse to the kingdom, where White King became famously plump without his master's discipline.
Despa undergoes subtle but significant development. Initially introduced as a somewhat greedy and eccentric mentor, his actions consistently reveal a caring and selfless core. He stages difficult lessons to strengthen Bojji's mental fortitude and shows genuine compassion for others, such as when he orchestrates a plan to tutor a poor girl rather than simply taking her money. His journey takes him from a reclusive life of training to a more active role, ultimately leaving his own pursuits behind to return to the underworld and manage the kingdom's affairs in his brother's stead. This demonstrates that his loyalty to family and the well-being of his students far outweighs his personal desires.
His notable abilities are almost entirely non-combative. While he cannot fight effectively, he is a genius-level strategist and the most gifted coach in the world of the story. His power lies in his perceptiveness, his deep understanding of the human body's mechanics and pain receptors, and his ability to craft personalized training that brings out the best in any individual, no matter how weak they seem. This analytical mind and ability to see potential where others see none is Despa's true and most formidable strength.
