Description
Haruna Saotome is a student at Mahora Academy, attending class 3-A and holding seat number fourteen. She was born on August 18 and has a blood type of B. Her appearance varies between adaptations, with hair often shown as green in anime versions and black in the original manga, although some depictions give her pink or brown hair. Her eyes are typically portrayed as light brown or red. Haruna is an active member of both the Library Exploration Club and the Manga Research Society, and she is a frequent companion of her close friends Yue Ayase and Nodoka Miyazaki, with whom she forms the well-known Library Trio.

Haruna is characterized by her energetic, outgoing, and assertive personality, which stands in contrast to the more reserved natures of her closest friends. She is known throughout the school as a skilled rumormonger, possessing such a well-developed ability to disseminate information that she can spread a piece of gossip from one end of the campus to the other in roughly two hours. Academically, she is proficient and performs well on school assessments, a trait she shares with many of her clubmates. A central aspect of her identity is that she is an aspiring and talented manga artist who works under the pen name Paru or Haru. Her creative interests lean toward the magical girl genre, and she is also noted to enjoy tea ceremonies and chaos, while disliking bugs and deadlines.

Haruna's primary motivation is closely tied to her love of creativity and the fantastic. Her fascination with manga, magical artifacts, and the idea of magical girls drives her actions once she learns about the existence of real magic. Unlike some of her classmates who react with shock or denial, Haruna wholeheartedly embraces the magical world and is eager to become a part of it. This enthusiasm is so strong that upon discovering the secret, she immediately attempts to secure a Pactio, or magical contract, with her teacher, the young mage Negi Springfield, by trying to kiss him without fully understanding the ritual. She also takes it upon herself to act as a matchmaker, particularly for her friend Nodoka. She makes it her mission to encourage a romantic relationship between Nodoka and Negi, often doing so with zealous and pushy tactics that may disregard Nodoka's own reservations.

Within the story, Haruna plays a significant role as a key member of Negi's social circle and later his adventuring party. Her involvement deepens during the Mahora Festival arc, where she uncovers Negi's identity as a magician using her sharp observational skills. Upon discovering that her friends were already aware of the secret, she cleverly used a self-created manga depicting an interrogation to pressure them into revealing the full truth. Following this revelation, she becomes a core member of the group that supports Negi. She travels with him to Kyoto, and later, after being turned to stone during an incident at the Kansai Magic Association, she is part of the journey into the future and the climactic battle against Chao Lingshen during the festival. Haruna is also one of the students who accompanies Negi to the Magic World. While there, she famously uses her artistic skills to earn money by introducing manga to the inhabitants, which allows her to purchase a large, goldfish-shaped airship she names the Paru-Sama that serves as a mobile base for her friends. Throughout the Magic World arc, she provides crucial support in combat and strategy, working alongside her classmates to fight enemies, gather intelligence, and plan escapes.

Haruna's key relationships are primarily with her fellow members of the Library Exploration Club. She shares a long-standing friendship with Yue Ayase and Nodoka Miyazaki, having known them since elementary school. As the most outgoing of the trio, she often tries to push her more introverted friends into romantic action regarding Negi, leading to both comedic and heartfelt moments. Her relationship with Chisame Hasegawa, another classmate, also becomes notable as they work together in the Magic World. Haruna also shares a unique bond with the fairy Chamo, who is quite fond of her and is instrumental in helping her secure a Pactio. Her relationship with Negi Springfield is that of a student and teacher, but she also becomes one of his formal magical partners through a Probationary Contract. She is the sixth person to form such a contract with him.

Over the course of the series, Haruna shows considerable development in her capabilities and role. She begins as a talented but ordinary student and talented artist, but after forming a Pactio, she evolves into a formidable magical combatant and strategist. Her ability to adapt her artistic hobby to real-world and magical challenges demonstrates significant growth. By the epilogue, she has fully embraced her talents, becoming a best-selling author in the Magic World, where she achieves overwhelming popularity, particularly in the boys love genre. She makes Megalo-Mesembria her primary residence and earns more money in her lifetime than any of her former classmates. She even maintains a private warpgate to use for shopping trips with friends when she experiences writer's block.

Haruna's most notable ability is derived from her Pactio with Negi, which grants her the title Fictrix Comica. Her artifact is called the Imperium Graphices, a set comprising a magical sketchbook, a quill, a hat, and an apron that materializes over her clothes. This artifact allows her to bring to life anything she draws in the sketchbook, transforming her two-dimensional illustrations into three-dimensional golems and objects. The strength, size, and function of her creations are limited only by her imagination and drawing speed. As a talented manga artist, she possesses incredible drawing speed, with feats including creating three lifelike golems in two minutes and a mid-level golem in just 2.7 seconds. She has used this ability to summon a wide variety of constructs, including Shield Maidens for defense, a Flying Manta Ray for transportation, a cat-like golem named Donzura for carrying and protecting people, and even lifelike copies of herself and others to fool enemies. Beyond her pactio abilities, Haruna is also an astute observer, possessing a keen nose for detecting romantic feelings among her peers, a skill she refers to as smelling the love reek. Her cunning and strategic thinking make her the class's unofficial but highly effective rumor-monger and information broker.
