Description
Jazz is one of the original Autobots who followed Optimus Prime on the mission aboard the Ark, which eventually crash-landed on Earth where the crew lay dormant for four million years before being reactivated in 1984. Serving as Optimus Prime’s second-in-command and head of special operations, Jazz holds a high rank within the Autobot hierarchy, often functioning as the leader’s indispensable right-hand man.

Jazz is distinguished by his deep appreciation for Earth’s culture, which he developed quickly after arriving on the planet. He has a particular love for music, especially jazz and rock and roll, and his speech is often peppered with cool, laid-back slang reflecting his interest in human pop culture. His signature motto is to do everything with style or not bother doing it at all, and he prefers to accomplish missions by dazzling others with flair rather than taking the easy or straightforward path. He is known for being clever, daring, and versatile, with an easy adaptability that makes him invaluable in the field. However, his insatiable curiosity about human behavior and mannerisms can sometimes be a liability, as he is prone to becoming distracted from primary objectives by interesting aspects of Earth culture.

In the story, Jazz is frequently given the most dangerous assignments, which he undertakes with characteristic coolness and improvisational skill. He is a capable fighter, wielding a solar-powered photon rifle that can accurately hit targets from nearly a mile away, and he can also deploy a shoulder-mounted flamethrower. One of his most notable abilities is an audio-visual disorientation attack, using a full-spectrum searchlight and 180-decibel stereo speakers to create an overwhelming sensory barrage that confuses enemies. He is also able to glide for considerable distances using rear-mounted ailerons. On Earth, his vehicle alternate mode is a sleek Porsche 935 Turbo, a form that he greatly appreciates.

Jazz maintains a close and trusted relationship with Optimus Prime, built on mutual respect. He also develops a strong friendship with the communications officer Blaster, as the two share a love for Earth’s music, much to the annoyance of other Autobots. He interacts easily with human allies such as Spike and Sparkplug Witwicky, and his personable nature helps bridge the gap between the Autobots and the people of Earth. In the 2005 era of the Generation One continuity, Jazz is stationed on Moon Base One, monitoring Decepticon activity on Cybertron. When the planet-eater Unicron attacks, Jazz is among those swallowed by the colossal Transformer before eventually being rescued by the human Daniel Witwicky and the Autobot Hot Rod. Following the movie events, with the death of Optimus Prime, Jazz’s role as a frontline soldier decreases under the new leader Rodimus Prime.
