Description
Nyssiana is a secondary antagonist in the 2019 film Alita: Battle Angel, a cyborg assassin operating in the sprawling lower city of Iron City. She is a wanted criminal with a bounty placed on her head and belongs to the criminal circle led by Grewishka, the massive cyborg enforcer who carries out orders for the unseen ruler of the floating city Zalem.

Nyssiana's background is not explored in detail, but her role shows that she is a seasoned operative used to deception and violence. Her most defining moment comes when she poses as a helpless victim, disguised as a prostitute in distress, in order to lure the doctor and part-time bounty hunter Dyson Ido into a trap. When Ido attempts to rescue her from Grewishka, she drops the disguise and reveals the entire situation as an ambush designed to kill Ido and the newly awakened cyborg Alita. This deception marks her as a calculating and ruthless fighter who is willing to use her appearance to get close to her targets.

In terms of personality, Nyssiana is sadistic and theatrical, taking clear delight in the fear of others and in playing with her prey before striking. Her cruelty is matched by a pronounced overconfidence, as she believes she can easily dispose of Alita during their confrontation. This arrogance proves to be her undoing, because she badly underestimates Alita's combat instincts and far superior fighting ability.

Physically, Nyssiana has a skeletal, almost insect-like frame that is frequently compared to a praying mantis. Her body is streamlined and built for speed, and her primary weapons are blade-like scythes mounted on her arms, which she uses to slice at opponents with swift, sweeping motions. Her design intentionally blends motorcycle components with mantis-inspired forms, giving her an unsettling, predatory silhouette that stands out among the cyborgs of Iron City.

Her motivations are not deeply developed, but she acts as a loyal operative within Grewishka's network, carrying out his plans and participating in the attack on Alita and Ido. Her relationship to Grewishka is one of close alliance, and she works alongside him and other criminal cyborgs to ambush their enemies. In production materials she is described as his partner, though the film itself largely presents her as one of his trusted subordinates.

Her role in the story is brief but significant. She appears during the ambush sequence and engages Alita in combat after her disguise is revealed. Despite her lethal arm blades and agile body, she is no match for Alita, who has begun to recover her lost combat skills. Nyssiana is killed when Alita kicks her head with enough force to separate it from her body and lodge it in a nearby wall, killing her instantly. The blunt, brutal manner of her death serves to demonstrate Alita's raw power and sets the tone for the larger conflicts that follow.

Nyssiana undergoes no character development, as she is introduced and eliminated within the same confrontation. Her importance lies in what she represents: the dangerous and deceptive forces loyal to Grewishka and, by extension, to Zalem. Her defining traits are her disguise-based ambush tactics, her sadistic confidence, and her mantis-like combat design, all of which make her a memorable but short-lived threat in Alita's journey.
