Description
Chihaya Usabuki is an eighteen-year-old with a severe communication disorder and a lifelong dream of early retirement. After repeated failures in job interviews, she jumps at a listing for fully remote work and becomes an Actor, a remote operator of a humanoid work machine called an Actanoid. The setting is a near-future Earth where dimensional gates have connected the planet to a resource-rich but hazardous parallel dimension known as the New World. Because of biological contamination risks, humans cannot enter directly, so Actanoids piloted from secure bases are used for exploration and development. Nations and corporations compete fiercely for territory and resources inside the New World.
Unable to ask others for help, Chihaya relies on her own instincts and resourcefulness to get through each assignment. She intends to take only safe, peaceful jobs and avoid trouble. However, her natural piloting talent, combined with a tendency to resolve every situation through overwhelming force and explosive solutions, causes her to unwittingly foil countless conspiracies and enemy operations. The outside world misinterprets her actions as deliberate warmongering, and she gains the feared reputation of the Bomber, a legendary combat specialist who leaves destruction in her wake. Meanwhile, Chihaya herself remains bewildered and distressed, repeatedly asking why her honest efforts to work lead to such chaos.
The story follows several narrative arcs. Initially, Chihaya struggles to find any non-combat assignment as her reputation grows and war-related jobs dominate her feed. Later volumes introduce international tensions, foreign spy units such as the Mask Gardener, and massive creatures like the multicolored dragon called Doraran. In one arc, she investigates a rumored dragon and inadvertently triggers a conflict involving the dragon’s powerful abilities. In another, after a conflict over Japan’s New World is settled, Chihaya moves to a global common New World and becomes fascinated with a capybara-like creature called Hotoruposso. Her innocent report about the creature accidentally sparks a continent-wide hunting craze that threatens to drive the species to extinction. Through it all, Chihaya only wants a quiet, peaceful job, but her unfortunate string of misunderstandings and her own hidden competence continue to inflate her legend as the world’s most dangerous operator.
