Description
In 2050, Tokyo has been transformed by Meta Reality (MR), a seamless blend of the real and virtual worlds. Citizens equipped with brain-implanted MR sensory chips enjoy unprecedented convenience and immersive experiences—except for those afflicted by a rare condition. High school student Taiki was born with an incurable MR bug that distorts his perception and often lands him in trouble. His empathetic nature makes him an easy target, but it also draws him toward the mysteries that plague his digitally augmented city.

One day, Taiki stumbles into a conspiracy involving a series of "ghost" incidents—MR avatars leaping to their apparent deaths from rooftops. In the course of his investigation, he meets Lily, a super-advanced AI entity known as a Robotica. She appears as a beautifully rendered girl with no physical body, existing entirely within MR. When Lily attempts to connect with Taiki through MR link, his bug interferes, stripping her of her higher-level powers and forcing her to take up residence with him. Blunt, self-indulgent, and fiercely loyal to her own desires, Lily is an unlikely partner—and a natural contrast to Taiki’s earnest, accommodating personality.

Together, they form the core of a makeshift team, soon joined by Kurumi, Taiki’s childhood friend who initially drifted apart from him after middle school, and Asato, a reclusive, human-averse MR gamer who becomes fascinated by Lily's nature. Operating from Asato’s home, the group calls itself Team Level Robotica. Their mission: investigate and neutralize Kiramon—monsters spawned from the broken hearts or suppressed emotions of humans, made manifest in MR. Each case—a missing MR pet, a classmate suddenly muted from all digital communication, a rumored ghost in an old archive building—leads them deeper into the hidden emotional landscape of the city. The monsters are not just glitches but reflections of human pain, and Taiki’s unique perception, born of his bug, becomes a key weapon in reaching both the monsters and the people behind them.

The story unfolds across two light novel volumes. The first, Re:bel Robotica 0, written by Ryo Yoshigami, serves as a prequel exploring how Taiki’s MR bug first brought him into conflict with the shadowy forces behind the Kiramon phenomenon. The second, Re:bel Robotica, written by Gakuto Mikumo, follows the full team as they race across Shibuya to confront a growing wave of MR anomalies that threaten to unravel the very fabric of their society. At its core, the narrative is a near-future youth story about connection, alienation, and the struggle to understand both technology and the human heart in a world where the real and the virtual are no longer separate.
