Description
High school teacher Mitsuo Ando is called to investigate a bizarre mass death. Six employees of an office have all died simultaneously of heart failure, with the sole survivor being Misaki, a former student of Ando’s. Misaki has no memory of the incident, but she has mysteriously become pregnant, and her fetus is growing at an unnaturally rapid rate. Teaming up with another former student, forensic scientist Natsumi Aihara, Ando discovers a mysterious CD-ROM at the scene. It appears to be a digital version of a deadly curse that killed the office workers and somehow impregnated Misaki.
As they struggle to understand this new technology-based menace, they are joined by Mai Takano, a woman with knowledge of a previous supernatural crisis involving a cursed videotape. Mai explains that the tape was created by a vengeful spirit named Sadako Yamamura, who is now evolving her methods. Having found the videotape curse ineffective, Sadako has begun experimenting with digital tools to achieve her ultimate goal of being reborn into the world.
Set in late 1990s Japan, the series follows Ando as he delves into this mystery while haunted by a personal tragedy: the recent death of his young son, an event that has left his family fractured. The narrative forms a sequel to the television drama Ring: The Final Chapter, continuing its lore while shifting the threat from analog video to the digital realm. Over the course of thirteen episodes, Ando, Aihara, and Mai race to uncover the full scope of Sadako’s new plan, facing her increasingly direct interventions as she attempts to circumvent her previous defeat and ensure her survival through a new, technological incarnation.
