Parallel to this main storyline, a secondary narrative arc involves Miami Metro hunting the Phantom Arsonist, a serial killer who traps his victims in burning cars. More critically, Captain Maria LaGuerta reopens the case of the Bay Harbor Butcher, Dexter’s former serial killer alias. She strikes a deal with former Deputy Chief Tom Matthews, agreeing to help him regain his pension in exchange for access to old case files, setting the stage for her to eventually close in on Dexter.
