Description
In the 27th year of an alternate Meiji era, where the kanji for Meiji itself means maze, a young man named Naguri travels from the countryside to the capital of Asakusa. Carrying a large sword and calling himself a samurai, he arrives to achieve his dream and quickly moves into a share house. The city he finds is a strange and chaotic place where spirits, samurai, technology, and even alien species all coexist due to rapid westernization.
The share house becomes the center of the story, bringing together a group of unlikely housemates. Naguri is eighteen and self-proclaimed in his samurai status, hailing from a rural background that leaves him unfamiliar with city slang and bureaucratic systems, often making him appear foolish. His primary motivation for coming to the capital is to find a childhood friend, a girl who was an excellent martial artist but moved to the city to become an idol. Another resident is Sashigane, a nineteen-year-old civil servant who shares a room with Naguri. He is described as a cool tsundere and a bit of a clean freak, with a respected position among locals. The third housemate is Rachette, an alien with immense physical strength who is looking for work as a cleaner. She has a crush on Sashigane that goes unappreciated and keeps a pet mouse for company.
As the story unfolds, Naguri struggles to adapt to city life, leading to trouble because he cannot understand slang or bureaucratic language and often jumps to conclusions. His simple desire to help others clashes with the complexities of a world where traditional swordsmen are being looked down upon due to westernization. A notable early narrative arc involves Naguri finally locating his childhood friend, who has become Yasuri or Yacchan, a member of the idol group Kendo-musume, having left her martial arts past behind when it became obsolete. Meanwhile, Rachettes job prospects are threatened by the rise of robot cleaners, highlighting the technological tensions of this alternate era. The story balances these character-driven comedy moments with fantasy action, as the housemates navigate a society where the balance between the human world and the shadow world is unstable.
The series was published in Monthly Comic ZERO-SUM magazine, with its first volume released in August 2016. The narrative concluded in 2017 after a total of thirteen chapters compiled across two volumes. The final chapter ran in the magazine in March of that year, bringing the story of the unconventional share house to a close.
