Description
Lofus Ray Lightless, the eleven-year-old heir to a powerful noble house, has always reveled in his status as an arrogant and villainous aristocrat. He possesses immense magical talent and is not afraid to use cruelty and force against anyone who slights him. His comfortable life of selfish tyranny is shattered when he begins experiencing vivid, recurring nightmares. In these dreams, he sees the world as a popular RPG, where he is fated to become a minor villain at a magic academy. After bullying a commoner hero, he meets an early and disgraceful death, killed off unceremoniously as an unimportant obstacle. Horrified not by the fact of his death, but by how insignificant and early it is, Lofus vows to change his fate. He refuses to be important enough to die as a throwaway character and decides to use his foreknowledge to manipulate events for his own survival.
The story is set in a fantasy world where the events of a famous RPG have become reality. Armed with his dreams of a doomed future, Lofus sets out with his trusted and loyal attendant, Carlos, to a remote fishing village. According to his dream, a devastating monster attack will occur there in three years. However, upon arrival, Lofus discovers the timeline is already shifting, and the disaster is happening now. He is forced into a massive, grueling battle against sea monsters, where he unleashes hidden powers that never appeared in the game’s original narrative. Despite his selfish motives and his constant insistence that he is acting only for himself, his actions inadvertently save the villagers. This earns him their bewildered admiration and draws the attention of others, including a girl who was supposed to become one of his future killers.
Lofus is a perpetually angry and grumbling protagonist who refuses to become kind or heroic, even as he is forced into the role. His primary goal is to understand why he is being targeted by the narrative and to break the gears of fate that lead to his death. Key figures around him include his father, the head of House Lightless, who appears harsh but may be more complex than Lofus remembers from his dreams. There is also a suspicious head knight whose true loyalties are unclear, suggesting larger conspiracies at play. As Lofus navigates a world that is beginning to deviate from his dream knowledge, he encounters other characters from the game’s future, such as Warm, a member of the Demon Lord’s Council of Evil who, in the present, is simply a man who loves his wyverns.
The narrative arc follows Lofus as he reluctantly accumulates power and allies. In one significant arc, he investigates a break-in at his family’s ancestral crypt, a dungeon filled with monsters. There, he rescues Lilka, a bright and talkative girl with no sense of personal space, who is trapped inside. Unlike Lofus, she does not seem to possess any knowledge of the game’s plot, making her an anomaly he cannot predict. Another major development occurs when the main antagonist of the series appears and formally invites Lofus to join the Council of Evil as one of the Four Heavenly Kings. Lofus must struggle to refuse the position, as the narrative itself seems to be trying to force him onto the path that leads to his death. This confirms his suspicion that some other force, perhaps another person who knows the future, is actively trying to manipulate fate, and Lofus must uncover who it is before he is written out of the story for good.
