Description
The unlicensed katana smith Lutz lives in a modest settlement outside the city walls, struggling to make a name for himself. He has just completed his magnum opus, a katana of such bewitching beauty and ferocity that merely gazing upon it is dangerous, as its lethal allure nearly drives him to take his own life. As an unlicensed craftsman, he has no legal way to sell this masterpiece. However, when his only real business partner, Claudia, is captured by crooked knights who plan to sell her into slavery, Lutz knows exactly what to do with his perfect blade. He trades the unnamed, unsigned katana for her freedom. The peril of the rescue draws the two together, and they quickly become lovers and then devoted spouses, forming the emotional core of the story.

Meanwhile, within the city, an old and celebrated enchanter named Gerhard finds himself in a horrendous creative slump. Confident in his abilities but lacking a proper canvas, he longs for a unique sword to serve as his muse so he can create an enchanted weapon capable of finally impressing the kingdom's seemingly indifferent hero. When Lutz's unmarked masterpiece makes its way to Gerhard, it sparks an immediate and profound connection. This meeting of minds sets the stage for a partnership between the young bladesmith and the veteran enchanter, soon joined by other obsessive craftsmen such as an engraver who falls madly in love with Lutz's creations. Together, this gathering of self-proclaimed maniacs who have given their lives and souls to crafting enchanted swords begins to forge weapons of extraordinary and terrifying power.

The enchanted weapons they create together are never simple tools. They possess a dangerous and often unsettling sentience. The first katana, which ends up in the hands of the hero Ricardo, has the power to simultaneously arouse those who wield it and drive them toward suicidal impulses. As Lutz and Gerhard continue their collaboration, each new blade they produce has unintended and escalating consequences, influencing the very politics of the kingdom and its neighbors. Their creations are so compelling that they can start throne wars, alter diplomatic negotiations, and plunge regions into chaos. Despite their intentions to simply create superior works of art, their actions repeatedly pull them into the center of major events.

As Lutz gains renown from his work, he and Claudia are granted a title and brought into the city, raising their social standing but also placing them in greater danger from the machinations of the royal court. Subsequent narrative arcs follow the couple as they navigate these new political waters, including being tasked with creating a blade of equal value to a legendary jewel from a neighboring country to secure peace. This weapon, once delivered, triggers a violent succession war. Another arc follows the young Princess Listill, who regards Claudia as a big sister. During a journey to visit them, the princess is kidnapped by bandits. Even after her rescue, the vicious rumors about her captivity cause further political turmoil. Through all these crises, Lutz and Claudia remain a steadfast and unusually affectionate couple, with their active love life providing a warm and refreshing counterpoint to the growing darkness around them. The series, which began as a web novel on Kakuyomu, is ongoing, following the gloriously deranged few who care only for their craft, regardless of whether their creations bring about a golden age or the collapse of society.
