Description
Kyosuke Tsurumaki and Kai Amano are two young men whose shared passion for music led them to form the duo Kanitama, with their sights set on a major debut. However, their dream is shattered when Kai dies in a tragic traffic accident the day before their big break. Consumed by grief, Kyosuke abandons music entirely, becoming a freeter who drifts through life without purpose, living at home and working part-time jobs to get by.
Three years after Kai’s death, Kyosuke is caught off guard when a familiar figure appears at his home. Kai stands before him, looking and acting as if nothing has changed, with the same blunt and forceful personality he had in life. Kai’s unexpected return is a mystery, even to himself, but he wastes no time in confronting Kyosuke about his stagnant existence, delivering a harsh truth: even if a person is alive, doing nothing with their life is the same as being dead. Kai’s presence rekindles the joy and passion that Kyosuke had lost. He is slowly persuaded to face the world of music once more, rediscovering the thrill of layering sounds and creating melodies alongside his former partner. Yet, as they begin to recapture their lost harmony, a lingering question remains: how long can this second chance last, and what is the true nature of Kai’s reappearance?
The story is set in contemporary Japan, following Kyosuke as he navigates the melancholic reality of a young adult who has given up on his dreams, contrasting it with the vibrant, almost supernatural return of his musical partner. Kyosuke is a 22-year-old who was deeply scarred by loss, becoming disillusioned and withdrawn. His character arc focuses on overcoming his trauma and learning to embrace life and music again. Kai, in contrast, is the energetic and straightforward driving force of the duo, whose sudden return serves as the catalyst for the plot. His presence is both a blessing and a source of emotional tension, as he embodies the dream that was stolen from them. The narrative also features a circle of friends including Takeshi, Makoto, and Minoru, who orbit the pair’s journey.
The narrative is structured around Kyosuke’s emotional recovery. The first major arc, The Accident and the Fallout, establishes the tragedy and its devastating effect on Kyosuke, setting the stage for his listless life as a freeter. This is followed by The Miraculous Return, where Kai reappears and forces Kyosuke to confront his past and the dormant love for music he has locked away. The subsequent arc focuses on The Restart, as the two begin creating music again, exploring the joy of their renewed partnership and the struggle to pick up the pieces of a shattered dream. This leads to The Rising Tension, where the fragile happiness they share is constantly shadowed by the mystery of Kai’s existence and the foreboding sense that their time together is limited. The final arc, The Final Performance, deals with the looming, inevitable farewell and the ultimate resolution of whether Kyosuke can truly move forward and keep the melody of their bond alive.
