Description
Four years have passed since the Demon Lord was defeated and the world was saved, but the hero who made that victory possible never returned home. The kingdom, now enjoying an era of peace, has undertaken a project to compile the fallen hero's great deeds for posterity. To accomplish this, the crown princess begins interviewing the three surviving members of his party: Leon the Sword Saint, Maria the Holy Maiden, and Solon the Sage. But beneath the official narrative of celebrating the hero's legacy lies a darker question that no one seems willing to answer directly. How exactly did the hero die?

The hero in question is Ares Schmidt, an awkward, clumsy, and untalented commoner who somehow rose to become the prophesied savior of the realm. His party members each have their own complicated relationships with him. Leon, a proud noble who was also considered a prime hero candidate, initially harbored prejudice against the commoner Ares yet ultimately calls him a friend. Maria the Holy Maiden and Solon the Sage complete the group of four who ventured forth to defeat the Demon Lord. Only three came back.

The narrative unfolds through a distinctive dual structure. Each interview with a party member reveals their memories of the hero and their shared adventures, presenting one version of events colored by their personal perspectives and potential biases. Following each interview, the story shifts to fragment chapters that show the same past events directly through Ares own eyes, giving readers a more immediate and unfiltered look at his experiences, emotions, and relationships with his companions. This back and forth between what the survivors say and what actually happened creates an ever deepening mystery about whether the hero died in the line of duty against the Demon Lord or whether one of his trusted comrades was responsible for his death.

Beyond the central whodunit, the story explores deeper thematic questions about the nature of heroism. What truly makes someone a hero? Is it inherent talent, divine prophecy, or something else entirely? Everyone in the kingdom agrees that Ares was the only one who could become the hero, yet by all conventional measures he seemed the least suited for the role. The investigation into his death becomes equally an investigation into his life and what he meant to those who traveled beside him.

The first volume focuses entirely on Ares and his party, with the mystery reaching a complete resolution by the end. The second volume shifts to follow an entirely new hero and a different death, making each installment a self contained mystery within the same thematic framework. The series is complete in two volumes and has been released in English by Yen Press under their Yen On imprint.
