In an unknown country at an uncertain time, the land known as Magatsukuni is filled with邪物 (magatsumono), malevolent entities that threaten human existence. People live in agricultural villages, and a harsh ritual selects certain young individuals to become shrine guards, known as shinboujin. These chosen few are sent to a shrine that has been exempted from the village. The protagonist, a young man named Kazuchi, is one such individual selected for this duty. However, the land where he is assigned as a shrine guard is revealed to be the frontline of humanity's defense, a place that maintains a barrier to trap the magatsumono. Kazuchi finds himself thrust into battle against these mysterious and dangerous forces. The narrative follows his journey as he is taken by train to this unknown frontier to confront the monsters that plague the land. The story blends action with slice-of-life elements as it explores the life of a young warrior in a strange, hostile environment.
