Description
In a near future where global economic systems have collapsed and reformed into a shadow network of debt-based city-states, gold has been outlawed as a destabilizing currency. Only one substance retains true value: Ankesu, a rare, malleable metal that cannot be counterfeited and is mined exclusively beneath the ruins of old Tokyo. The protagonist is Kagehisa Akinari, a former financial analyst turned scavenger who can appraise any object’s true worth by touch alone. After his younger sister is kidnapped by the Syndicate of Ledgers—a ruling cartel that controls all Ankesu trade—Kagehisa is forced to infiltrate the underground auction houses and gladiatorial pits where Ankesu is wagered like life itself.

The setting alternates between the Drowned Floors, flooded lower levels of Tokyo where outcasts live on salvaged scrap, and the Pinnacle Exchange, a floating fortress where the Syndicate’s elite gamble with Ankesu bars. Kagehisa is joined by Rin, a former Syndicate enforcer with a mechanical arm that can forge Ankesu into temporary weapons, and Hokuto, a child prodigy hacker who maps the invisible debts binding every citizen.

Major narrative arcs include the Appraisal Games, where Kagehisa must outbid and outfight rivals in a tournament that determines who is allowed to mine Ankesu; the Ledger Breach, in which Hokuto uncovers that Ankesu is not a natural metal but a byproduct of an old pre-collapse experiment to store human memories; and the Sister’s Price arc, where Kagehisa learns his sister was not merely kidnapped but sold willingly to become a living Ankesu refinery—her body surgically altered to process raw ore. The final arc, Zero Weight, follows the trio as they attempt to destroy the Syndicate’s central ledger, which would reset all debts but also erase every Ankesu bar in existence, potentially freeing the world from the metal’s curse or plunging it into an even darker age of barter and blood.
