Description
Keito is a person in their late twenties, a company employee who is engaged to be married. Despite planning this future as a woman, Keito has never felt firmly cemented into a specific gender or sexuality, leading to a deep sense of unease as the wedding approaches. In a parallel narrative, Aya is a woman in her fifties trapped in a marriage that has long since gone cold. Although she continues to perform the role of a wife, she feels invisible and disconnected from her husband and family, leading her to seek a way toward emotional and financial independence.

Their otherwise unrelated lives become connected through a shared struggle against the restrictive labels of woman, wife, normal, and common sense. The story is set in contemporary Japan, moving between Keitos urban environment and Ayas quiet, suffocating suburban home. It explores how both characters fight against the invisible chains of societal expectation that bind them.

The narrative unfolds in alternating chapters that follow each womans journey. Keitos arc involves confronting their gender identity and ending a relationship built on pretense, eventually finding acceptance with Haruka, a hairdresser who is a gay woman. Ayas arc follows her attendance at a divorce counseling center, where she finds encouragement from others in similar situations and takes steps to start working and become self-sufficient, eventually realizing she may be asexual. The tone is understated and psychological, focusing on small gestures and quiet moments of realization rather than melodrama. The work has been recognized for its nuanced portrayal of queer experiences, receiving a nomination for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and appearing on lists of notable comics. An English-language omnibus edition is scheduled for release.
