A living teenage girl named Merit awakens in the Egyptian Underworld with no memory of dying, only to discover she is very much alive and trapped among the dead. The only being who can open the portal back to the land of the living is the god Anubis, but he has been cursed by his father, the god Osiris, for neglecting his sacred duty of judging human souls. Now trapped in the form of a lazy, apathetic teenager who wants nothing to do with humans or his former responsibilities, Anubis lacks the power to help Merit return home.

Refusing to accept her fate, the determined and accident-prone Merit becomes relentless in her pursuit of the good-for-nothing god, following him everywhere and refusing to give up despite his attempts to escape her. The god Thoth explains that breaking the curse requires the intervention of a living human, making Merit the key to restoring Anubis's powers and her own path home. As she inserts herself into his life, she also becomes entangled with his complicated family, including his stern father Osiris and his younger brother Horus, who masks his affection for Anubis through constant arguments. A prophecy also hangs over the underworld suggesting that a human heart could bring either salvation or destruction.

Throughout the story, Merit's stubborn kindness slowly chips away at Anubis's indifference. Though he claims to be bothered by her presence, he finds himself saving her from danger and confronting painful memories from his past. As their bond deepens, hints of romantic feelings emerge, and Anubis briefly regains his powers when emotionally connected to Merit, suggesting her influence may be the key to breaking his curse entirely. However, complications arise when Merit befriends both Osiris and Horus, only to be suddenly kidnapped by other gods who have their own plans for her. The series follows her journey to break the curse, return to her waiting family, and perhaps heal the fractured divine family she has come to care about across two volumes.
