Description
Seventeen-year-old Itsuki Suminoe has always kept people at a distance, convinced that loving someone means preparing to lose them. His quiet, orderly life in the suburban town of Kamihoshi changes forever one rainy evening when he discovers a wounded young woman collapsed behind his family’s shrine. She has feathery white wings, a faint halo that flickers like a dying bulb, and no memory of how she fell to Earth. Her name is Rael, and she is a guardian angel who was cast out of the celestial realm for breaking the most serious divine law: she fell in love with a human whose prayers she was assigned to watch over. As punishment, her wings were partially clipped and her grace was sealed, leaving her mortal and stranded.

Itsuki reluctantly takes her in, hiding her wings under oversized hoodies and claiming she is a distant cousin. The setting is contemporary Kamihoshi, a town built around an ancient shrine that sits on a minor ley line—a weak point between the human world and the higher spheres. This location draws wandering spirits, minor demons, and occasionally celestial agents. Rael adjusts to human life with awkward wonder: she cries at microwave beeps, tries to pray to vending machines, and sleeps curled up on the shrine’s altar because it feels familiar. Itsuki, who works part-time as a shrine caretaker, slowly warms to her genuine kindness, and the two develop a careful, unspoken bond.

Three notable narrative arcs drive the story. The Judgment Arc begins when a lower-ranked angel named Sariel arrives to retrieve Rael. Sariel is not cruel but rigid, believing that angels who love humans endanger the cosmic balance. She gives Rael one month to prove that her love for the human she watched over—a boy named Yuuto who died three years ago—was not a selfish act. Rael must locate Yuuto’s reincarnated soul, which has been scattered across three living people in Kamihoshi, and help each of them without revealing her identity. If she fails, her memory will be erased and she will be reconditioned into a mindless guide spirit. Itsuki, realizing his own feelings for Rael, decides to help her, even though it means facing his fear of loss.

The second arc, The Shattered Vessel, focuses on the three soul fragments. One fragment lives in a lonely old woman who runs a failing bakery; another in a bullied middle schooler who draws constellations on his arm; the third in a cynical nurse at the local clinic who has given up on miracles. Each fragment remembers Yuuto’s essence differently—compassion, hope, and sacrifice. Rael must help each person resolve a deep emotional wound without directly telling them who she is. During this arc, Itsuki discovers that his own mother died saving him from a car accident when he was seven, and his repressed guilt attracts a minor demon called a Gloom Eater. Rael protects him with her remaining grace, weakening herself further and causing her halo to crack.

The third arc, The Fall and the Flight, sees Sariel return early, having observed that Rael is now in love with Itsuki—not just the memory of Yuuto. This is a second, greater transgression. The celestial court orders Rael’s immediate reconditioning. Itsuki, desperate, makes a reckless contract with a local shrine spirit: he offers all his remaining life years in exchange for one day of Rael’s full angelic power. On the day of her scheduled retrieval, Itsuki collapses from the contract’s toll. Rael, refusing to accept his sacrifice, shatters her own halo completely, turning it into a mortal’s ring. She renounces her angelic nature, choosing a single human lifetime with Itsuki over eternity without him. Sariel, moved by this final act of selfless love, reports that Rael’s grace dissolved on its own, effectively allowing her to remain on Earth as a human. The story ends with Itsuki recovering in the shrine’s garden, Rael’s wings now gone, her halo a simple silver band on her finger. They share a quiet morning, uncertain of the future but no longer afraid to hope.
