Description
In a world where magic is banned and mages are ruthlessly persecuted, young Nona Ewin lives a precarious existence with her mother Lancia in a town constantly watched by the Bureau of Magic Surveillance. Nona’s father, a human, was killed by the Bureau before she was born simply for his relationship with a mage, forcing Nona and her mother to hide their true nature. Despite the danger, Nona finds some solace in her friendship with Lovi, a human girl who accepts her. When Lovi’s glasses break, Nona makes a small, kind-hearted decision to use her magic to repair them, an act that draws the Bureau’s attention.

The Bureau moves swiftly, capturing Lovi and her parents. Under threat of death, Lovi is forced to reveal Nona’s secret, but the Bureau murders her and her family regardless, teaching Nona a brutal lesson about the regime’s utter cruelty. Lancia unleashes her own formidable magic to save her daughter, destroying the town in the chaos but becoming separated from Nona during the escape. Nona is soon captured and imprisoned in a Bureau facility known as Base 30.

There, she meets Miramira, a fellow captive mage. Miramira once tried to escape with her older brother, but he was caught and sent to the dreaded Uvral Facility, leaving her resigned to a life of forced labor for the guards as the price of her continued existence. While Miramira has accepted her hopeless situation, Nona, having just witnessed the murder of her best friend, burns with defiance. She refuses to submit, organizing a daring escape and demonstrating a resourcefulness and ruthlessness that surprises both her new ally and their captors. The two form an uneasy alliance, with Nona determined to find her mother and Miramira hoping to locate her brother, embarking on a journey through a world designed to crush them.

The narrative is a dark fantasy that explores the heavy cost of hiding one’s identity. Nona’s specific magic is tied to sewing and thread, which she uses with inventive and sometimes brutal effectiveness. Her mother Lancia possesses a far more destructive comb-based magic, while Miramira can manipulate gravity. The series’ early arcs establish the horrific status quo of the Bureau’s oppression before focusing on Nona’s imprisonment and subsequent escape from Base 30, setting the stage for her larger quest for freedom and reunion with her lost family.
