Description
In a modern-day Japan where ancient objects awaken as spirits, a young man named Hyoma Kunato is consumed by a single-minded hatred. As a child, he witnessed his older brother and sister murdered by a tsukumogami, a malevolent spirit inhabiting a parasol. Now driven by vengeance, he serves as a Saenome, one of the few people with the ability to exorcise these spirits and send them back to the afterlife. Hyoma’s methods are brutal and uncompromising, believing all tsukumogami to be evil. This violent approach causes such concern for his family, the head of the Kunato clan, that he gives Hyoma an ultimatum: learn to coexist with tsukumogami or be disowned.

Hyoma is sent to live in a traditional Kyoto household with Botan Nagatsuki, a gentle young woman who shares her home with six tsukumogami she considers her family. These spirits, known as the Wedding Trousseau, have protected Botan since birth and are deeply suspicious of the vengeful young man forced upon them. Forced to live under the same roof, Hyoma is torn between his ingrained hatred for these beings and a promise to protect Botan, who seems to harbor a mysterious power within her. As Hyoma reluctantly begins to see that not all tsukumogami are monsters, the very spirit that killed his siblings, a Karakasa umbrella tsukumogami, resurfaces, threatening to plunge the human and spirit worlds into war.

The narrative operates on two central axes: Hyoma's internal struggle to overcome his trauma and the escalating external conflict among tsukumogami factions. Botan is revealed to be a Yorimashi, a human hosting a lost soul known as a Marebito, making her an Arahitogami, a living deity revered by spirits. This status makes her a target for powerful forces, including rogue Saenome like Kokutan Yachimata who seek to exploit her power for their own ends. As the series progresses through major confrontations like the betrayal of the Gagakuryo clan and the battle for Botan, Hyoma must navigate a fragile alliance with the Wedding Trousseau. He is forced to confront his past in the Yomiji, the land of the dead, ultimately questioning the very nature of souls, objects, and the bonds between them as the story builds toward its conclusion in the ancient capital of Kyoto.
