The story is set in an alternative historical Japan where spirits and ancient magic are real. Ruri Takizawa was born as the daughter of a long-established and respected clan of diviners and exorcists. After her parents die suddenly in an accident, her family is overtaken and she loses her status, being forced to work as a servant just to survive. Desperate to escape her life of misery, Ruri is willing to do anything, even becoming a tool for a political marriage. However, numerous matchmaking sessions continue to fail because the spirit of her deceased father stubbornly remains by her side, interfering with each encounter.

Ruri eventually meets Izumi Toshida, a young man who claims to be an onmyouji, a master of magic and spiritual arts. While assessing some of her family’s ancient spiritual tools, Izumi demonstrates a strange inability: he apparently cannot see the tsukumogami, spirits that reside within old objects, which is an impossibility for a genuine practitioner. Ruri, who can see these spirits, realizes that this man is an anomaly. Seeing him as her only chance to change her fate, she offers him a deal. In exchange for keeping his secret that he cannot see ayakashi, Izumi will take her into his home as his servant. Thus begins the strange relationship between a fallen shrine maiden haunted by spirits and an onmyouji who is blind to the very world he claims to master.

The series is based on a light novel and is published by Shogakukan in Japan, with the manga adaptation beginning serialization in March 2025 in the magazine Yawaraka Spirits. As the narrative develops, Ruri must navigate her new life, dealing with various spirits and supernatural events that Izumi cannot perceive, while the secret of his condition and the true nature of Ruri’s powers are gradually revealed. The work blends fantasy, romance, and historical elements through the lens of Japan’s rich mythological and spiritual folklore. The story is currently ongoing.
