Description
In the land of Yamato, humans and divine beings called kami coexist in a symbiotic relationship. Humans generate a vital energy known as aura, which the kami depend on to grow and maintain their strength. In return, the kami use their powers to protect the people from Stigma, a corrupting miasma that arises from negative emotions and can twist humans into monstrous beings or drive them to madness.

The story primarily follows two kami partners, Shirakami Fubuki, a fox spirit, and Ookami Mio, a wolf spirit, who serve as guardians of the Shirakami region. Fubuki is a laid-back and casual guardian who spends much of her free time playing video games, even forgetting her sword at Mio’s house or prioritizing instant noodles over home-cooked meals. Despite her relaxes demeanor, she takes her duty seriously, using her powers to cleanse Stigma from afflicted individuals. Mio is the more level-headed and responsible of the pair, acting as Fubuki’s caretaker in many ways. As an unarmed brawler, she fights with fire-infused punches and kicks, and she possesses a unique ability to astrally project herself to trace the emotional or spiritual residue of missing persons, a power tied to a traumatic childhood experience she keeps secret.

The central conflict of the first major arc begins when several children go missing from the capital city of Kyo-no-Miyako. Fubuki and Mio are dispatched to investigate, leading them to the Oeyama mountain range. There, they are attacked by a powerful oni named Nakiri Ayame, who can remotely control a large suit of animated samurai armor with her will-o'-wisp familiars. The battle takes a turn when the pair discovers that the kidnapping case is not what it seems, as the children may have been taken not for nefarious purposes but to a place safer than their own homes. This investigation puts them on the trail of a malevolent spider yokai named Jorougumo, who serves as the arc's primary antagonist.

The narrative is structured around several key episodic incidents that build the world and characters. One early chapter involves an investigation of a haunted mansion known as the Lost Doll's Manor, a location saturated with Stigma due to rumors spread in the absence of its owner. Inside, the duo encounters Nue, a mute, childlike yokai who only wishes for friends but can only communicate by luring people inside with creepy phenomena. Another incident involves a female student possessed by a stigmatized squirrel ayakashi, which manifests as a large beast physically attached to its host.

As the story progresses, a greater-scope villain emerges. Magatsuhi-no-Kami is a dark god who once terrorized Yamato, defeated and sealed away only through the sacrifice of many powerful kami. Fragments of its power, known as the Shards of Magatsu, are dark magatama jewels brimming with Stigma that can empower yokai like Jorougumo to exist independently of a human host. Recognizing the threat of this evil's possible resurrection, the high-ranking kami Kyubi dispatches Fubuki and Mio to the cultural hub of Akihabara to seek allies. There, they meet an elite shrine maiden who also works as a popular idol named Sakura Miko, who may hold the key to an ancient power that slumbers in the region. The series blends supernatural detective work with slice-of-life humor, balancing lighthearted moments of gaming and everyday chores with dramatic battles against corruptive forces and explorations of past trauma, creating a tone similar to a weekly supernatural incident-resolving adventure.
