Description
Seon-woo Park leads an unremarkable life as a stickler-for-the-rules accountant at an ordinary company, firmly believing he is painfully average in every way. The one notable exception exists entirely in his private fantasies, where he harbors a deep-seated desire for rough, BDSM-centric sex with a dominant partner, a side of himself he has never been able to explore. This routine existence is upended by the arrival of a new manager at work, the jaw-droppingly handsome and confident Tae-moon Jeong.
The central conflict ignites from a profound misunderstanding. While surreptitiously glancing at Tae-moon's phone during a meeting, Seon-woo sees notifications from a queer dating app, leading him to believe their sexual preferences align and that a one-night stand is possible. He awkwardly propositions Tae-moon, who is simultaneously dealing with the fallout from Seon-woo's strict auditing of his expense reports. Instead of seeing a proposition for consensual sex, Tae-moon mistakenly concludes he is being blackmailed into a sexual relationship. The humor and tension of the story derive from the two men having completely different conversations: Seon-woo is giddily trying to initiate a BDSM encounter, while Tae-moon, angry and confused, believes he is being coerced to protect his reputation.
Seon-woo is a socially inept dork with no filter and an utterly disastrous taste in clothing, routinely showing up for encounters in garish outfits like crimson tuxedos and snakeskin suits. His rigid adherence to rules has made him unpopular at work, leading to a threatened transfer to a meaningless position. Tae-moon is his polar opposite: a charismatic extrovert carrying the heavy baggage of being the illegitimate son of a powerful conglomerate head. He views Seon-woo through the lens of his cynical past, unable to comprehend that Seon-woo is genuinely as guileless and straightforward as he appears. A running comedic element is Tae-moons reluctant caretaking, as he is both horrified by and compelled to fix Seon-woos fashion disasters, which becomes an early sign of his growing, if bewildered, affection.
Several notable narrative arcs drive their relationship forward. The initial arc is dominated by the prolonged blackmail misunderstanding, preventing any genuine emotional connection for the bulk of the early chapters. As the story progresses, a jealousy arc emerges when Seon-woo follows Tae-moon advice to improve his appearance, leading to newfound attention from coworkers that makes Tae-moon possessively angry. Another key arc involves Seon-woo bringing Tae-moon home to meet his parents in an attempt to clear up Tae-moon mistaken belief that Seon-woo was abused, only for his wonderfully average family to create new misunderstandings. Underlying all of this is Tae-moons ongoing struggle with his family legacy, which colors his inability to trust Seon-woo genuine nature as he slowly moves from seeing the relationship as purely physical to acknowledging deeper feelings.
