Five years ago, a young boy named Sheeta was left by his father in a small community of Littlefolk living inside a hollowed-out log. These people stand no taller than a blade of grass, and their world is one of constant danger where rats, weasels, ants, and even the weather pose lethal threats. Sheeta has grown up surrounded by a supportive but cautious community, always holding onto the hope that his adventurer father will return for him. His best friend, Nala, shares no such patience and burns with a desire to explore the outside world, idolizing the mysterious life of Sheeta's missing father.

When the pair spots a strange smoke signal in the distance, Nala becomes convinced it is a sign from Sheeta's father and runs off alone to investigate. The village quickly calls off the search, assuming no one could survive in the wilderness for long, but a determined Sheeta grabs his only inheritance from his father—a box of matches he calls "magic wands"—and ventures out into the vast, perilous forest to find his friend.

Almost immediately, Sheeta's journey collides with that of Izuna, a samurai-like warrior from another Littlefolk settlement. Izuna is hunting a fugitive, and his target is none other than Sheeta's own father. Despite this tense conflict of interest, the two become reluctant traveling companions, with the experienced Izuna teaching the naive Sheeta the brutal survival skills necessary to exist in their oversized world, from building a wick-and-oil campfire to preparing frog soup.

Their quest takes a dramatic turn when they discover a young girl named Kugel, the headstrong princess of a remarkable village built of hardened earth inside a tree hollow. This settlement's economy is built on processing tree sap into delicious syrup, but this valuable resource has drawn the attention of a relentless army of ants that has breached their walls. While Kugel's mother, the village chief, wishes to send her daughter away to safety, Kugel refuses to abandon her home without a fight.

After helping Kugel's people defend their village against the insect invaders, Sheeta is ready to continue his search for Nala. However, Izuna, believing Sheeta is slowing his pursuit of the boy's father, abandons him in the wilderness. Now truly alone and forced to rely on his own wits, Sheeta faces his greatest challenge yet as the forest enters the deadly rainy season. Armed only with his limited experience and his father's fast-depleting magical gear, Sheeta is more determined than ever to bring his friend Nala home safe, even as the mysteries surrounding his father's past and disappearance deepen.
