In a world where humans are designated an endangered species, the dominant race of Chimeras has established well-intentioned breeding programs to manage the propagation of mankind. A young human girl is raised in luxury and ease so that she may one day fulfill her role in the conservation of her kind. The Chimera boy assigned as her caretaker tends to her every need, fully devoted to preparing her for the future that awaits. However, as they spend time together, new and forbidden feelings begin to blossom in the boy's heart. This emotional shift sets the stage for an incident that will go down in history.

The story then leaps forward fifteen years. The world has changed, and the human population has dwindled to a mere eleven surviving individuals.
