Two hundred years have passed since the Yamato princes brought peace to the Japanese islands by defeating the clans of the earthly gods and sealing the deities themselves away. However, this fragile peace is beginning to crumble as the seals are being undone, allowing the earthly gods to return. The story follows Kawakami Takeru, a rebel leader of the Kumaso who has gained immense, inhuman power from an earthly god whose seal was broken. In response, Prince Ousu, who is destined to become the legendary Emperor Yamato Takeru, leads the imperial army to subdue the rebellion.

During his campaign in the province of Aki, Prince Ousu encounters Monko, a wandering merchant who sells haniwa clay statues. He soon discovers Monko possesses a remarkable secret ability: by using his haniwa, he can transform into a powerful hero known as Kamuya Ride. This armor grants him the strength to stand against the vengeful earthly deities. The story blends action, fantasy, and political intrigue as Monko, Prince Ousu, and the warrior Ototachibana navigate a world of conspiracies and divine conflicts.

Over the course of the narrative, Monko and his allies achieve a victory against their sworn enemies, Amatsu Noritto and Amatsu Mirror. However, Monko is not trusted by the royal family. After being accused of a crime, he is imprisoned by the Yamato court and forced to join Prince Takeru on an Eastern Expedition to the land of Ezo as a form of penance. Their mission is to pursue Nomino Sukune, a figure with deep ties to the royal family. The story expands as the party is attacked by rebel armies and the Kunitsushin gods, culminating in the appearance of the very man they are hunting. The series continues to explore the consequences of the returning gods, forcing the characters to question the balance between the human world and the divine forces they fight.
