Description
Ryokuta Hanazawa is a high school boy so low key and unassuming that he remains virtually unnoticed by his classmates, despite being present in the room. Seated next to him is Shio Mizuno, one of the most intelligent, talented, and popular girls in the school. Their quiet coexistence is disrupted when Ryokuta discovers Shio’s secret: in a secluded corner of a local park, dressed in a costume and mask, she films herself dancing. He learns that she uploads these performances to video sharing sites under the pseudonym Smile. Inspired by her outlet for self-expression, Ryokuta gets an idea to break free from his own anonymity. From the claustrophobic privacy of his own cramped room—a space of only eight tatami mats—he begins to film and post his own anonymous dance videos.
Mizuno is portrayed as a talented and popular figure who hides her online activity behind a mask, while Ryokuta is a boy who feels invisible in his daily life and discovers a way to assert his identity through dance. The story is set against the backdrop of their high school and the digital world of video platforms, where their anonymous online personas, Smile and Ryokuta’s new identity, begin to intersect with their real lives. Notable narrative arcs would focus on the development of this dual existence, as the two characters, who barely interact in class, become connected through their secret hobby. The tension builds from the risk of exposure and the gradual evolution of Ryokuta, who learns to express himself beyond the physical confines of his small room.
