Eight years ago, a fire destroyed the wealth and home of Tsubaki, the daughter of a prosperous merchant. Left destitute, she was sold to the Yoshiwara pleasure district of Edo-period Tokyo. Her childhood friend and former servant, Shin, coldly turned his back on her in her new poverty. Consumed by fury and a desire for revenge, Tsubaki threw herself into training to become a top-ranking oiran, the highest class of courtesan. Her plan: to beguile Shin with her beauty and then cruelly reject him, just as he had done to her.

But her path is far from straightforward. The reigning number-one oiran of the house is Takao, a stunning, aloof, and seemingly cold-hearted woman who takes a keen interest in the new girl. Takao alternately torments and protects Tsubaki, making her training a gauntlet of rivalry and unexpected lessons. The deeper Tsubaki digs into the workings of the pleasure quarter, the more she discovers that Takao harbors a stunning secret: the beautiful oiran is actually Shin himself, disguised as a woman to serve in the all-female house. His motives and his true identity remain hidden, and his complicated feelings toward Tsubaki both hinder and help her rise.

The manga follows Tsubaki’s journey from a stubborn, vengeful girl into a strong and capable courtesan, navigating the strict hierarchy of Yoshiwara, the demands of clients, and the constant presence of her disguised first love. Along the way she encounters other characters: the loyal servant Koyata, the mysterious wolf-like figure Ginrou (who appears in the included one-shot The Silver Wolf’s Sakura), and various patrons and rivals. The story blends historical drama with romantic tension, comedic misunderstandings, and a touch of the supernatural. Tsubaki’s resolve hardens even as her feelings for Shin grow complicated, and she must decide whether revenge or genuine love will define her future in a world where appearances are everything.
